Swan Neck Detachable Towbar

I have a swan neck detachable tow bar I know that the ball must be kept grease and rust free in order not to contaminate the pads.

However when not towing it has become difficult to remove the swan neck from the car. My question is will it be okay to grease the part of the swan neck that locks it to the socket on the underside of the car.

I presume by doing so it will make it a bit easier to remove but as I am not sure I thought I would ask first

I have this type of towball on my Audi which despite having a cover over it still manages to go rusty right inside where all the locking bits and pieces are. I just keep wiping the loose rust marks away when I remove the part and have tried a bit of rust treatment on the end of a paint brush to cure it. Although I think it would be ok to use grease on this part, I don't think I would because it just ends up going everywhere - hands, trousers, car boot etc. My towball inserts vertically so I might well try a few squirts of WD40 to loosen up the mechanism and the lock etc. Obviously keeping it well away from the actual hitch. Any surplus spray would either drain back out cleanly or the surplus could be wiped away to avoid the messy grease problem.
