swift caravan alarms

when we purchased our caravan last March we were told that the model of caravan we purchased had a tilt and sensor alarm fitted, we have since discovered that this is not the case it is only a shock and sensor alarm. if my caravan had been stolen out of my drive would the insurence company have coverd me?. When i approched the dealer they daid they have just found out that the caravan needs to be handled brutally to get alarm to sound and that the alarms are basically rubbish.

Hello J,

If you were told by the seller of your new caravan that it had a specific type of alarm fitted, and it transpires that it does not, then you have a case against he dealer under trades descriptions.

Talk to Trading Standards.

thanks for your posts i will have to look into what alarm is fitted. caravan is in for servicing just now with all paperwork inside van but shall reply as soon as i find out.

Sadly, without taking your dealer to court, you're unlikely to get them to budge.

As I've said elsewhere in this forum, dealers are superb at bending over backwards for you in order for you to hand over your hard-earned. When it comes to actually sorting out problems, they do it almost through gritted teeth.

Pity after-sales doesn't have the sales department's drive and vigour.

sorry i have'nt responded we still have not received our caravan back from service, as when we went to pick up van they had lost our keys, so we eventully got entry to caravan with the dealers main key to discover a lot of the work it was in for had still not been carried out. after demanding to speak to owner i was no further forward as it felt as though he could not care less. his reply was "we will contact you on Monday with regards to keys and you shall have to come back and collect it once repair is done" (another day off work as the workshop hrs are not very handy for people who work 6 days)hopefully next week i shall have the make of alarm. when i said about alarm to owner he said it wouldnt be a tilt sensor that was fitted as if the wind blow the caravan the alarm would be going off all the time.

I fitted an alarm, an SAS, to my van myself, having bought it at the NEC a couple of years ago. I had a lot of trouble trying to set the sensor tha is supposed to detect the legs being wound up, and after calling SAS for advice they sent new sensors, stil no-go. after acouple of more calls they asked if I had a new van, which it was, to wich they replied, thats the problem, there is no wear & its well lubricated & the sensor relies on vibration to set it off, no vibs no worky!!!!!!!

J. It would seem that is what your dealer was on about, need to be handled brutally!

We have CCTV -with sound-of our Coachman VIP being stolen from our driveway with the sort of alarm on that you are speaking of...bashing off the locks on the corner steadies didn;t set off the alarm, neither did bashing off the hitchlock. It was however, activated when the theives entered the van after bashing the door lock and the infra-red inside tripped.....to disarm the system they simply jumped back into the van and gave a good thump to the keypad above the door - hey presto!!!! And the manufacturers bumf told us that it could only be de-activated by keying in 'your own personal code'!!!!! Seems those nice recycling chappies that love to take our new vans have a universal keypad code for these systems...a fist!

We have a 2007 Swift Conqueror with a tilt and sensor alarm fitted. If set correctly it works fine in both tilt and sensor modes. I have never heard such rubbish from a dealer. Please let us know who the dealer is. Alarms on my previous Bailey's and my present Swift have all worked as per manufacturers instructions.
