Tempered glass dinnerware

Browsing my local Ikea I found a new range of tempered glass dinnerware - very similar to the Corelle brand that is sold in many caravan and camping shops.
Its plain white and lightweight so might be of interest to anyone looking for some caravan dinnerware that isn't melamine - I have bought some to try as not too keen on plastic so will see how it fares.
At only 50p per item (bowls, side plates, dinner plates and mugs are available) its very cheap so it if doesn't survive for long in the van then its not the end of the world.

I love. Corelle so something as good for less would be brilliant. Let us know how how it goes on in use.

Hi Mel, we have just been away for the weekend (first proper outing!!!) and I took my new IKEA crockery to keep in the van.
Have to say it was great - I can't directly compare to Corelle as I haven't used it but definitely superior to melamine in my opinion and won't scratch like plastic does.
The dinner plates also fit in the vans microwave which was a pleasant surprise when I need to warm up my Friday night fish and chips !
I wanted Corelle for the van but with all the expense of buying our first van and all the essential stuff, couldn't really shell out for it just yet, but this IKEA stuff (called OFTAST) is just what I was after at a fraction of the price.

Thanks. It sounds great, I shall have a look next time I am in IKEA. I already have some Corelle, but there is always room for more. :)

We bought a set of Corelle as an Xmas pressie for the van, but weighing the mugs they come out as an EXTRA 1kg over the weight of the melamine mugs for the set of 4. I will be evicting the Corelle mugs from the van and reinstating the old ones. Looking at the IKEA website I cannot see any matching OFTAST mugs either.

The mugs that come with a Corelle set are made of Stoneware not tempered glass, so will weigh more than melamine. Let's face it most things weigh more than melamine. Depends how much you like coffee out of a melamine mug. :S . I also looked at the IKEA range. Good substitute for Corelle but, as Sir WC said, no tempered glass mugs.

There were mugs available in store - none shown on the website though.
I guess they may have been called something else but were made of the same material and were next to the plates/bowls on display.
We didn't buy the mugs as we have some enamel/tin mugs so we use those in the van.
Next time I'm in the van I will take some scales and check the weights just so I know for reference as I'm starting making a spreadsheet of the weight of everything to make sure we don't accidentally overload when we go away for more than a weekend and take extra kit with us.

Just been to IKEA to look for glass mugs. We got some that were labelled as 'New' on the shelf, in fact so new they are not on the website. ;) The name is SANNING with code 003.193.76 and cost 95p each, made in France.

The mugs are now on Ikea website, see here. Certainly lighter weight and less chunky than the earthenware ones that come with Correlle.

I like the look of those plates I must say. I may have to endure another visit to the maze to see if I canget some.

On another note Myself and the Long Haired Admiral always take along china mugs for our cup o' tea, the melemine mugs are for visitors

We've had them a while now and they are very nice to use and fit perfectly in the van sink when washing up!
They have also withstood travelling in the van fine packed with protectors between them (59p for a pack in Home Bargains) and then wrapped in layer of newspaper.
I did get round to weighing them (4 dinner plates, 4 side plates and 4 bowls) but also had a vacuum flask and small cafetiere in the bag I was weighing them in and it was 5kg for the lot.
I think they have been a great buy !

We popped along to IKEA, and have purchased a set. The only minor point is that they do not appear to have a pasta type bowl in the range. But we are impressed well spotted.
