Thanks everyone who has posted replies to my question, I've just bought a new car with high level rear lights, (not for towing our caravan, possibly a small trailer), and thought that maybe I could simplify the towbar wiring .... obviously not!

Note you can buy dedicated 'canbus' wiring kits for many of the latest cars rather than pay for an expensive factory wiring kit.
Towsure and Towequipe sell them, we've fitted the Towsure dedicated kits with no problems and with big savings. Plug n Play more or less.
