The all new Gaslight cylinders from BP

At first glance, these new cylinders look good- less weight-half the weight of traditional steel cylinders, more gas-10kgs as compared to 6 or 7kgs depending on what you use, propane or butane - if you can fit these things in your gas locker of course. I would certainly consider them, they only do them in propane though - Swift and Bailey are looking at them and promise that they will ne able to fit them in all new models but does anyone know a bit more about them or have you already got them? BP say they have had fantastic response to them. www.bpgaslight.co.uk

I read somewhere (a couple of different articles) that these are only going to be obtainable through Truma and will take a few days for delivery! Personally, I think BP has made a big mistake because I doubt that they will be available on caravan sites for ready purchase. Who wants the wait of a few days if their gas runs out on site?

If I am wrong on this, I am sure forum members will correct me.

Half the weight?

The BP Gaslight cylinder is 6.7kg plus the gas. A Calor propane 6kg is only 8.0kg plus the gas.

The saving is just 1.3kg, that's about 3 cans of beer!

The gas works out at about 50p cheaper per kg so it'll take 50 kg usage to recoup the hire cost (deposit) on the cylinder. Now that electric hook-ups are reasonably available to run the heating, fridge, water heater and microwave it'll take us about 1250 nights to recoup the cost!

BP Gaslight has clear advantages for new caravanners but not a lot to offer the rest of us.

Thanks guys. You all have a point. Not so sure that being able to see what you have left is that much use either- as we all know, the use of the arm and weight of cylinder gives a pretty good idea of gas left except you have to remove it from the locker to test it. Truma are involved in this deal I know and I think they will be the only distributors- we'll just have to wait to see if the take off. I won't be rushing to be first in the queue. Blimey Brian! 3 years to use 2 cylinders? What have you been doing my son? Eating out every night? LOL

For anybody who fancies a trip to Thrapston, Northamptonshire I can prove that the 5kg GasLight does exist......we are an Authorised BP Distributor and we have them in stock and we are already selling them.

I am willing to send pictures to prove this.

If anybody wants anymore info regarding the 5kg or 10kg GasLight and fittings ring 01832 735111 and ask for the Happy Shopkeeper

We've bought a 10kg Gaslight, though haven't fitted it yet as we need to buy a 27mm adaptor for it. We hope to have the best of both worlds as we will have one Gaslight and one Calor in our van. We ordered ours online and it arrived within 2 days with free delivery, but they are also available at some local dealers - you can do a postcode search on their website.

The Truma deal is exclusive only for caravan outlets, not for garden centres etc.

We felt the risk of trying them was not great, as unlike Calor you can always get a 50% refund on the bottle hire charge.

We also think being able to see the gas is a really innovative idea!! The weight difference with our already heavy outfit was worth it in our opinion.

You can get a refund on a Calor cylinder BUT it's a sliding scale dependent on time, down to 25%. You need to keep the original hire agreement and take it back to a Calor Dealer to get the refund, see Yellow Pages for your nearest. Garages, caravan sites and caravan dealers are usually just stockists so can't handle refunds.

A further advantage of BP Gaslight is that you can exchange these cylinders in any of the countries in Europe that are participating in their programme (currently Scandinavia, Austria, Netherlands, Germany, with more being added - ref: http://www.bpgaslight.com/EN/main.shtml)

these cylinders can be refilled at SOME BP garages, but only the ones stipulated at the moment. You can read about these cylinders on a website

Take a look, I personally think they are a great idea but at the moment if you are not camping in the specific area of refill then you will have a long journey. They are currently only available in the 10Kg size but still a great idea. thanks, Gary
