Hi, anyone have any tips for preventing the settings on my Thetford fridge (the one with the button either side of the digital display), being accidently altered by over eager dish washers! It regularly is switched over to 12v or the setting is turned down to 1! Any ideas?

You will need the following:
Chopping board
Heavy duty meat cleaver
Waste bag
Errant fingers

Procedure:
Hold fingers on chopping board securely
Raise meat cleaver
Rapidly and forcefully bring meat cleaver into contact with fingers
Slide fingers into waste bin.

Job done

Failing that educate your fellow campers in the operation of the caravan

Happy camping

Sadly, as seems to be the case in our modern society, nobody else seems to care!!!

I have thought about making my fortune, manufacturing a clear plastic clip on cover!

Good luck with the cover.

Sadly, as seems to be the case in our modern society, somebody has nicked your idea and is knocking out cheap tacky copies in a sweatshop in China by now

It's an obsolete fridge, so you will have to put up with your daily trudge

That's the one Gagakev! Great fridge when you have it set right!

Keefysher, I would be happy enough if someone would hurry up and nick my idea, then the next time I go to the fridge for a cold beer it will actually be cold!!!

I had that fridge on my last van which would now be six years old. I frequently unwittingly set it to gas or 12v because when bending down to look in it, the control panel was the natural place to rest a hand.
I think the chopping board and cleaver applied to legs would be a better solution as then no bending would be required.
One has to wonder how many manufacturers actually test their products in situ. I cite rattling concertina roof blinds as another example of crap design.

Our fridge has just died halfway through a fortnight holiday :( Mat has gone to get cable to try and run it on 12v, as when it runs on gas you can smell it. It's a 13yr old Dometic

Will it run on 12v ? Thought it only worked when connected to the car with the engine running?
let us know if Matt succeeds as it would be good for back up.

Advice for matt...........(If you have your freezer in the awning) Place beer in there for 15 to 20 mins to cool down ;) ;)

Before you do anything isolate the fridge's gas supply. I assume you are not on an EHU or else the fridge doesn't work on mains?
There are plenty of good mobile engineers out there . May be best to call one of them to site.
Enjoy your holiday.

It will run on 12v but that side of the fridge has not got a thermostat just normally a on off switch for the power :eek:hmy:

If for instance the 12v element is 125w it will be pulling 10.4 Amps ( 125 / 12 = 10.416 ) all of the time so if you are not on EHU depending on the size of battery it won't last very long ...

Also depending on the output of the van's PSu if you are on EHU it could also throw up a few problems as some older PSu's are only 10A :eek:hmy:

Well, believe it or not, he did it! We don't have a battery in the van, we have a power supply instead. We are keeping the fridge topped up with ice water bottles from the camp site fridge, and turning it off when we go out/overnight. The new element has arrived at home (I am back overnight to collect GCSE results tomorrow) and will take it down to the van with me. All being well it should be back to normal fairly soon!!
Thanks for everyone's help on here - sadly as we have little Wi-Fi on site, I've only just picked up the thread now
