I am a new caravanner and would like some advise on which products to use for our toilet? There are so many products to chose from green, blue, pink fluid etc.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Pink = wash aid for the top tank

Blue or Green = odour killer and dispersant for the waste tank

Depends on what use you intend to put the toilet to, and how often you empty the waste cassette.

If your toilet is only for the odd night time pee, and you only stay 3 or 4 nights before moving on - and empty the cassette before you leave - then a half dose of either the blue or green liquid in the waste tank is fine - and a half dose of the pink wash aid in the top tank.

If your toilet is going to see serious use, then a full dose of green or blue in the waste tank is necessary - and a full dose of pink in the top tank

And try to be reasonably accurate when measuring out the blue or green fluids into the waste tank.

Wear gloves when adding the pink, green or blue liquids to the tanks - these have very strong dyes and will dye skin very efficiently - as one guy in France found out to his cost when cycling across the camp ground with the cassette on his handlebars.

They can give a nasty burn in undiluted form as well, however I don't use gloves as I find the dispenser bottles very good.

I was a little careless when I got my burn, if you do spill some on skin wash very quickly under running cold water.

The green is an eco-friendly version of the blue, although I am told it is not quite as good if you put your toilet to serious use - I did use some green (free sample) once and did not notice a difference but I can get the blue cheaper.

Hi Kay,

One thing to bear in mind is, do not use any bleach or other ordinary domestic toilet cleaner in the system. The chlorine in these products will harm the rubber seals over time.

I know a lot of people use things like Domestos in their tanks and say it does no harm but long term it will.

Beware, though if anyone using the toilet has asthma! We can only use genuine Elsan Blue, as anything causes breathing difficulties for Herself.

We use Kemdirect granular toilet additve ... top and bottom. It contains no dye so no need for gloves and if spilt just sweep up. Biodegradable and no smell from the toilet when we use it or empty the toilet....just liquid.

Elsan Blue also comes in sachet form so there is no confusion about what to add. Drop one in and it dissolves rapidly.

However, I do agree that the chemicals seem quite strong, especially in terms of odour. It almost seems like we have gone back to the old days of chemical toilets, when there was no doubt about its location??

While in France I use the chemical WC fluid for motorhomes etc sold in supermarkets. Brought some home as well. It is for use in the holding tank only and I do admit it has a far more pleasant smell than the Elsan fluids. It also seems to work well in its function.
