Thieving swine!

Woke up this morning and went to turn on the gas for the hot water, nothing! Switched on the hot plates, nothing. Went and checked outside and the gas bottle and regulator were gone! During the night some low life had come along and cut through the feed to the 19kg bottle which connected on the outside of the caravan and nicked them. They didn't even disturb the 4 dogs in the caravan. The bottle was almost full as we had used it only 6 times for cooking having collected it on the previous Friday. Obviously we were being watched as the bottle stood disconnected outside the caravan for a whole week. This is supposed to be on what is rated as a 5 star caravan site and is probably well known to a number of you.

I am now considering purchasing one of those cable alarms where one can hook up a number of items as we also have our satellite dish outside and the water barrells. Probably also buy a small safe to install somewhere in the caravan but I don't know where there is a spot where it can be fixed down onto the chassis to prevent removal of the whole safe. Any suggestions overall?

That's terrible - usually campsites are the safest places to leave almost anything! You really ought to name the site - there may be others staying there who may need to know.

Ian, have a look round the camping shops I believe there is a Tent Alarm on the market which is similar and can be used on the awning zip as well.Bazz.

I can think of a lot stronger name than "thieving swine".

What an awful thing to happen, its sad to think how low people will sink. I also camp with bottle, sat dish and water containers outside so I suppose we have to worry. I just wonder if it was a fellow camper or a prowler coming onto the site after dark. I think you should name the campsite.

It is an unfortunate thing to have to say but a small safe does give a feeling of some security for valuables. You can get a variety from e.g. Screwfix. Fit under a seat where you can drill four holes through the floor without hitting anything. Use coachbolts which do not have a very big head from the bottom up and use a steel plate with four suitable holes fitted on the otside - some safes have them supplied. Fit locking nuts inside the safe and protect with a bit of rubber. Then give some thought as to where to keep the (spare) key - not on the same ring as your main keys, which may also get stolen.

You can do the same in the car using either a safe as above or an ammunition safe from any good gun dealer.

Should have said in previous posting that in most cars you can remove a bolt used for tie-down eyes and put it through the safe floor - i do not recomment drilling four holes !

Hi Ian

You have my sympathy, we had a jockey wheel stolen in Cornwall, and friends had their water pump stolen and a broken one left plugged in to the side of their van, like you we hated the thought that somebody had targeted us, as a result we now use cables and padlocks on Aquaroll and waste containers,it is a pain but if it makes it more difficult for the opportunist thief so be it. The nature of our hobby means that it is impossible to secure all your kit, like chairs tables etc, just a reflection on society in general I am afraid.I suspect the level of crime on most sites is probably still very low, and the majority of folk are still decent and honest.
