hi folks i know this subject comes up every now & then & i am sorry to jump on the band wagon , but i can save 100 pounds on a smaller car each month plus petrol etc , i can save 100 pounds each month on paying for caravan each month plus depreciation & nearly 100 per month on storage , insurance, servicing, red pennant ,etc . thats 3500 plus per year . we was thinking of buying a trailer tent for owe 3 weeks hoildays in france in the summer and just heading south or to spain then that leave me 3500 plus to spend on hoildays , that leaves me with 1 weekin oct to spain , 2 weeks at easter to spain or static in paris , 1 week at witsun with traler tent to france , we use the caravan 9/10 months per year for the last 19 years but now fill we have to justifie using the caravan, just fill that i want to spend 7 days in the sun rather than spendig 7 days on a cold wet dark cc site in england...what do you think....pete

it seems you have made your mind up allready either way good luck with it, however trading 9 months in the van for 7 weeks of holidays seems like a no brainer to me sorry!!

Me thinks paying for caravan out right and storing it at home is smarter as is servicing it ourselves.

Do what you want, we all have to fit around where we live and what we want from life.

I love my cars and our caravan. Its all mine caravan, cotton sheets on the bed the pillows I like, drinks in the cabinet, type of coffeee, music selection, some nights I even sleep in the caravan here at home.

Why not just downsize? My car's a 2000 Zafira 1.8 (worth about 2,500 quid) and the van's a 91 Swift Corvette (worth about 1,500 quid).

All paid for, no outstanding finance, just repairs as and when are necessary. 35mpg single, 25mpg towing and assuming I get another 4/5 years out of them (which both being in good nick I should!) the depreciation works out at 800-1000 per year or 4000 in total (the total value of the outfit!).

If i'd bought a new Zafira and a new van of the same vein I'd lose more than that in value the moment I left the showrooms.

If you don't mind older vehicles (and I appreciate that some people do) then you could own this sort of outfit outright using just over one years payments on your current outfit, then owe nothing and suffer negligible depreciation.

Of course with an older outfit there will be niggly faults to sort but if you look around there are good cars and vans at very good prices.

Lots of rotten piles of crap as well though.

Hi Ginger Pete

I'm the same but, not so heavy on the exspenses though, only saving grace is we store for free. It will soon cost us money as its now 17 years old.

So a time will come to carryon or not.

hi folks ,just back from 1 week at cc club site longleat , very cold , lovely & warm in caravan still not sure what to do but holding fire at the moment. car & caravan both bought & paid for but you still need money to buy them , like the idea that the bed & toilet have been only used by us , don't really trust an older car & caravn getting us down to south france or spain but love to see older rigs on english sites , smiley don't give up just because your caravan is getting past its sell by date your the sort of person on an english site that i respect the most not the big new carvan & flash new car person....pete

Totally agree emmerson,

An older outfit may require more tlc than an older one but financially you have very little to lose in terms of depreciation. There may be an increased risk of breakdown (not yet tho - touchwood) but there is a similar risk with newer ones too! So long as they're looked after all should be rosy!
