Tiguan fast rattle / vibration when towing

I tow with a 2012 Tiguan with a Brink retractable towbar. Owned for 8 months. Only when towing do I get an annoying fast rattle, like a noisy vibration, at the rear of the car. I just cannot track it down, having tried everything I can think of. I tow a trailer as well, and then there is no rattle. So I reckon the fairly substantial noseweight is the cause. The weird thing is I lived with exactly the same rattle for 5 years in my earlier 2008 Tiguan and identical towbar! Has anyone else had the same problem and more usefully, has it been solved?

Can you describe the rattle I bit more. Is it rev dependant Or speed dependant. Noseweight should not affect it as it’s well within the cars load carrying capacity. Was it the same model of towbar on your last Tiguan and did you transfer it to this car? First stop would be to check all towbar fastenings to ensure they are properly tightened to the correct torque.

when I have had similar issue in the past I have emptied the rear of the car dropped the seatsremoved parcel rack and got a mate with some mechanical knowledge to try and identifify the noise problem, in my case it was an exhaust heat shield,

Start with the basics.

Have you measured the nose load and is it within both the car's and trailer's nose load limits?

Does the coupled hitch settles, such that the height of the geometric center of the tow ball sits between 350 and 420mm vertically from horizontal ground?

Is the cars rear axle load less than the specified limit on teh cars weight plate when coupled?

Is the cars suspension to the manufacturers specifications, and not worn or damaged.?

Thanks to all - I'll try and have a look at the exhaust to see if anything might be going on there.

I would check all heat shields not just the rear. I had my turbo shield come loose once, just one bolt, but it seemed to come from every direction.

The rear anti-roll bar vertical links can lead to a knocking/rattle at the rear end of the Tiguan.
The extra load on the back could place the suspension in a different position and make the noise happen.
The bushings wear and rattle around on the mounting bolts.
