Thank you all for your responses (even the bad-mannered one - that helped demonstrate the attitude to which I was alluding).

It would appear that my misgivings, were unfounded and that the clubs, and therefore the sites are largely apposite, in particular the CLs; there is a lovely one at the foot of Cadair Idris on the Dolgellau side that I have always wanted to try. Indeed perhaps my ideas were based on rallies rather than the sites, as some of you suggested?

We shall join both and hopefully enjoy exploring the myriad sites dotted all over the country.

Thanks again for all of you who took the time to respond, I am grateful.

Regards,

Steve

Both Clubs are very good. Yes, you can visit both without being a member, but personally I do not agree with it. I feel it is a Club, therefore iof you wish to take part, then join. It is not as if it is a fortune in annual fees.

The main difference on arrival is that the C&CC will guide you to your pitch and assist you in setting up, if required. The CC will let you find your own pitch and will help you set up, if asked, but do not be forthcoming in that regard.

There have been enumerable comments and opinions on the pros and cons of both Clubs on this Forum, so have a read of them if you wish. There are ongoing 'discussions' regarding whether the CC should introduce deposits or not, but nreally it is up to you. Have a look at both Club websirtes and make your own mind up. If you decide to travel abroad then being a member of either is definitely a good idea.

I have not joined any club just yet as this will be my first time this year so will see how it go's.

Do they really help put up your awning, and if only they could back my caravan up in to the space that would be heaven.

If anyone dose come across me I'm the one after 8 attempts to park and 2 hours to put up the awning in side out as well.

Things can only get better.

Pat and Reg
hi pat & reg glad you'er like me about the number times i try to back on to a pitch so i think blow it and un-hook and push van into place. my husband just gets me mad telling me what do when he can't drive but this year hope to go on a cc manovering course.

same with awning still trying on day we come home lol.

we joined both clubs last year when we started caravaning.

so if you see 2 people struggling next time you pull on to site it will be keith & ann lol

I have been a member of the c&cc club most of my camping and caravaning life, and only had a problem once, i was camped on the north east side of the Bonnie banks on a club site.

it was run by three cpouples two of the couples were superb, they alowed you to get on with it, if you approached them they sorted whatever problem you had not that there were many.

However they third couple, who unfortunatley for all on the site,, were in charge and behaved exactly as described in the first post. after spending four days there they actually asked me to move to a central pitch as the wife of the double act, had taken a booking from another member who stored his caravan on the site and wanted my pitch.

I was in the unfortunate position of having only paid up to that morning as we were undecided as to whther we were moving on, she refused to take my money and then claimed to be fully booked and that it was my fault as i hadnt came up early enough, i was becoming paranoid,, what had i done to these two, after speakin to the club head office and the other wardens,it would appear nothing,,she just wasnt very efficient and like many she was the only one who wasnt aware of this.

it did put me off and i was considering cancelling my memebership, however the beneifits as opposed to cost of membership are far better, and i am glad to say they are no longer wardens, on that site ( yeha ) and with a bit of luck for other unsuspecting campers/caravaners they arent on any sites.

On reflection though if this had been a friday night comedy show, i would have tuned in faithfully and even bought the box set..the whole four days were funny and not just the incident described,, maybe they cuaght me laughing, and decided to sort me out?...

I can see where Steve gets his preconceptions about 'Jolly Hockey Sticks' school marms and obsessive 'site ranger' types press ganging unwary and unwilling caravanners into 'daisy chain making'.

We felt exactly the same way Steve.

As a semi pro musician of many years until ill health called a halt I'm more of a night owl than a morning lark and the thought of the 'Kumbaya' and 'hey nonny no' shenanigans round a bowl of hand knitted muesli filled me with absolute horror!

We joined the C&CC ten years ago mainly to get good caravan insurance and this decision really paid off when our first ever brand new caravan which we'd owned for three months was written off in the floods three years ago.

We have stayed on a few 'mainstream' sites which are well kept, clean toilets and showers as you would expect but to be honest the 'no noise after 11pm' rule has put me off.

Don't misunderstand me, we are definitely not a noisy couple and I make an big effort never to disturb neighbouring caravanners or campers but I really resent being told what time to go to bed and hate the feeling of guilt when creeping silently across a site after a visit to a nearby pub.

For that reason we now visit certified sites which are quiet sites normally (but not always) having 5 pitches for caravans.

I respect others right to peace and quiet and when we are deep in the countryside we enjoy the same peace and quiet.

If we visit coastal towns we enjoy the hustle and bustle, live entertainment, children having fun and all the rest of it so we use commercial sites which cater for our choices.

Rallies!

Last year after much thought and foreboding we decided to try just one rally to confirm our deep suspicions that we'd hate every minute of the wretched experience. We're still C&CC members so we were allowed to take advantage of the low cost to members.

I wouldn't try to deny that there are some who come across as 'hey nonnies' on rallies.

I don't actually know any of them because we tend not to get involved in fancy dress parties or organised sport which is sometimes available.

We enjoyed mega cheap weekends, some with ehu and some not.

We've been on some 'boozy' rallies (last week was a case in point but the pub is through a gate from the site so many of us took full and fair advantage)

We've been on some rallies with top line entertainment laid on and some where yes, we have sat round a fire bucket on a summers night having a quiet drink and telling off colour jokes to each other. Try it just once would be my advice Steve, you never know..........

Two points here: Wether you own or rent the ground, it is yours, and no-one has the right to trespass on it, and non-members cannot use CC CLs, and may only visit them with the owners permission.

I've been a member of the CC for quite a few years, and almost always managed to find a pitch when and where wanted.

Last year, I spent 9 weeks on CC pitches with no both at all.

In all the years I've been a member, only one thing spoiled my membership. I don't go on their rallies since we attended a National Rally and it was announced over the tannoy "Children are not allowed to play football until after the church service!"

That was enough for us as a family, and we've steered clear ever since.

Poppersmurf while respect your views on children playing football, the church service is only around an hour long after that the children would have a minimum of 12 hours to play football, surely we can give up one hour for those wanting to go to a Church service on a Sunday, after all we are supposed to be a Christian Country.

are we in a christian country ,not realy,1/2 the churches are now turned into swanky apartments ,nursing homes & houses, multi cultural we are, sunday is now the biggest shopping day of the week, each to there own but if you feel the need to follow an imaginary freind do so ,its your preference, don't see why it should stop the other 90% of the country doing what they want to do on a Sunday.

Couldn't agree with you more Dave. That sort of attitude I would have expected to have died out in the 1930's or 40's. What possible harm could it do for kids to play footie before the zealots have their festival?

If we followed this line of thought, we wouldn't even have caravan rallies on a Sunday - we'd all have to go home on Saturday evening.

Where is it written "Thou shalt not play footie before church, but it's OK after"?

Why not: "No church until after football"?
