Hi, I am also new to touring, infact we don`t even pick up new van for about another 3 weeks... However, my wife is already panicking about a Toaster!! I have seen your comments on kettles so we are sorted there... Any advice on a Toaster....

It's refreshing to read that someone has their wife well trained and obviously concerned about providing for your needs 😉

The gas grill does o.k. but you sometimes need to turn the bread around to stop it getting burnt in the centre. Any normal household kitchen toaster seems to do, they don't appear to have the high wattage of a kettle.

With any mains electrical appliance somewhere on the appliance or the instructions it will tell you how much power it draws. You will find you get into the habit of checking that. Kettles are amongst the highest. Watch out for irons as well if your wife plans to keep you looking smart as well as feeding you. Some of them are on the high side, 2000w in some cases.

We use the cooker grill - yes it takes longer but we are on holiday in the caravan - what's the rush? If you load up the van with electric kettles, toasters (and all the other 'can't do without electrical items') then you are just using up valuable weight allowance which could be used for more important things like beer or wine!!

annie the reasons I use a kettle and toaster are i'm paying for the electric and i've also ran out of gas late at night before and couldn't get my morning cuppa i'm like a bear with a sore head without my coffee.
 
We use a small 2 slice toaster that we bought in a supermarket for a few pounds. It is fairly low wattage so does the job fine, although we always have to remove the smoke detector as it always goes off, even without burning the toast. It is very light so there is little weight handicap. Also we do not have a grill or oven thank goodness. We have plenty of storage space instead.

Thanks Rob, I don`t think the iron will get packed often, but if it did I dont think either the van or the car would have enough towing capacity to load HER ironing basket which I have named `groundhog day` cos every day it looks the same `full` and no different 🙂 think I will quit while I am ahead with her looking to operate a kettle and a toaster..

We too have a small 2 slice Kenwood toaster.

Much easier than faffing around with the caravan grill, trying to get it to brown evenly, especially if you're doing several rounds of toast.
 
Hello all, just to say l agree with Annie,we use the cooker grill to do our toast and it may take longer but it tastes nicer especially if you use a fresh uncut loaf and make the slices thicker and l have marmalade on mine.
