Toilet Fluid?

Hello All,

I'm a little confused. As i'm new to the caravan world (I picked up my van yesterday & i'm so excited), I was looking at toilet fluid online, & I'm confused what one to buy as there are several different types. Surely I don't need all types of the colour bottles?

Also, am I right in saying there is another type of fluid on the market you can buy to rinse throught the rest of your water pipes? if so, what is it called?

Cheers

Hi congratulations on your purchase.
to keep it really simple Blue goes into the casette to break down the solid waste and pink goes into the flush... you can puschase products to flush out your water system but the best product IMHO is milton..
Chemicals for the loo are very subjective, some will say do not put pink in the flush as it causes black gung (never experienced it myself) others will come on here and say they use anything from washing powder to broken up blue loo blocks in the casette...
each to there own!!!!

hi,
as Tony says toilet matters are very subjective and everyone has their own ideas, keep it simple is the obvious way,
there is a thread on the forum "the woosie club" that started in fun on toilet matters but basically it depends on how you decide to use the facilities.
some insist no number 2s in the loo, others use it only for emergencies and the rest well you know?,
the choice of fluids will depend on what you prefer your self, Elsan double strength blue used in recomended doses does well at breaking down solids but can be a little eye watering if only used for number 1's.
some sites however insist on the use of green biodegradable fluids as they have reed bed sewerage systems these fluids are not as good at breaking down solids but are eco friendly,
wether you use pink rinse or not is down to personal preference it is not essential but does freshen up the loo a bit,
we buy the double strength double 1litre pack (one blue-one pink) that cost about £12 and lasts all year, but keep a couple of small green bottles "stored under the cassette " for the occasions when it is required and do number 2's in the toilet block.

the main water butt and van water pipes should be sterilised once a year we use milton same as Tony but put severeal aquarolls of clean water through it afterwards and change the filter "if you have one" afterwards as it desroys the charcoal in the filter,

Milton is expensive, Wilkinson do their own version at a fraction of the cost. Think it's called Wilko Sterilising Fluid/Solution.
hi Lisa,
yes it is more expensive than some cheaper brands aldi tesco asda morrisons all do cheaper fluids some swear by white wine vinegar
but the cost is retrospective a new filtre is a tenner and it's only done once a year,

Sometime ago I came across the toilet fluids from Blue Diamond, Pink and Blue, it runs out some what cheaper than Thetfords.
Now as was mentioned above black bits appearing in the flush it was mentioned somewhere within in the forum it came from Thetford fluh . I did have this on one of our vans so not to let it happen again Ive always used Blue Diamond ,it does a good job of breaking down waste.,and the pink has a nice smell when flushed. One or two of us on here are using it and Aldi have just had it in at £ 6 each bottle.I do buy mine on line.Do make note that when preparing the waste tank put a good two ltr of water first.
Again as above flush the cold system at least once a year and use any of the steralising fluid or tablets Supermarket ,Wilkinson etc that do just as good a job as Miltons.

We have a fluid that comes in a bottle that measures the correct dosage which helps as otherwise it is hit and miss and can also go in the holding tank. I think it is called one flush but it is in the caravan which is in store 20 miles away so cannot check at the moment. Bought from the site shop but assume it is widely available.

I buy Elsan Blue in the big 4 [or5?] litre containers then I have two of the little square shape bottles, I'm not sure if all toilets are the same but mine has spaces under the cassette for 4 of them. I fill the small bottles & use 1/4 of one in each tank with 2-3 litres of water.
We don't use sites with loo blocks so it all goes in there.

As for 'Pink' I buy the cheepest stuff I can!
I'd warn against cheep 'Blue' as you get what you pay for & cheep works out expensive if you see what i mean? i once got some 'Towsure' own brand, terrible stuff!!

It is called "One" . We got some but I thought the smell was rather "fishy" when used, unlike the usual blue and pink stuff. We also have some of those Kem direct sachets. These are quite OK and at least don't spill if you put the top on wrong. (It wasn't me.....honest

Onechem is fine its fermaldahyde free and is acceptable to most chemical waste disposable sysytems.I used it for a while when it first came out and wasnt that impressed but again its a matter of your personal sense of smell.
I know its an expensive way of doing things but you will have to go round them all until you get the that suites your needs.
We do use the two chemicals just so that we have a nice smell when flushing.

We changed over to Onechem about a year ago and have been very satisfied with it and there are no restrictions on using the Thetford in our van. One chem is very economical given its measuring feature. We use Elsan double pink in the flush although you can use One Chem too. Bought 2 1 litre bottles for £20 inc pp from GSSPARES( see Google)

For effectiveness I have always found Elsan Double strength at the correct dosage works best although I have a few of the sachets for when I do not want to be messing about measuring chemicals in the rain or sub zero temperatures. Personally I can't stand the smell of Onechem, it is so bad it makes me gag, in fact I would rather use nothing and put up with the smell of my excreta. But each to their own and some people may like it (the smell of Onechem!).

Nice one Graham why not just say you don't like the smell of One Chem rather than dragging the thread down to such a base level?
