Just watched Top Gear on tv. There was a thing on there that I found quite confusing, and puzzled by.

They were pulling a 100 kg's caravan with a Kia car....which they said was the tow car of the year.

During the show one said they had a job to do 30 mph!

Also it took 3 hours to travel 54 miles!

A bit extreme, hardly a advert for caravans?

Whatcha think?

Top Gear is an entertainment for those who have not yet grown up. Any resemblance to a factual programme giving unbiased advice is purely accidental. It's what passes for "good television" on the BBC.

It must have taken a long time to set up the stunts, has anyone talked to the other people on the campsite who witnessed their antic's? Or was the whole thing a complete set up and filmed in a field somewhere not too far from the tv studio?

I never saw it Christine because I can't stand the pompous prat.

I did see that skit they did about caravanning because it was talked about on forums like this but I didn't find it at all funny. It was up to the standard of an Infant School play. If it had been more profesionally done it might have come up to the standard of the Chuckle Brothers but Sid James and co they are not. Clarkson wants to stick to what he's best at, drivingreviewing fast cars that most of the population can't afford.

TOP GEAR is a laugh, world class cocking about they call it!

But its just that a bit of a joke, i doubt even anti-caravan drivers would belive that the car was THAT slow, any one with sense wouldn't try that 3 point turn Etc.

The whole thing was pure fiction.

I'm a fan of TG but that piece wasn't their best by a long way.

It might be nice if Clarkson & Co. were to come with us propper caravanners, on a 11pm start ,overnight run to see how its done . the cool night, kids asleep in the back, quiet roads, no hassel.

BLISS!!

Top Gear is good for entertainment use only - as far as technical information is concerned they can only spout on about super cars. The rank and file family transport never gets a mention.

On saying that I have just returned to the computer having watched BBC4 and BBC3 since 8:30pm and enjoyed the experience. First of all there was the hits of the 1960s - Craig Douglas, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers, Shadows, etc. Then at 9:00pm there was an hour of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

If CLARKSON had a BRAIN he would be a danger .Just how the BBC have the brass neck to pay this goon i will never know.As for the program unless a car can do 0-60 in under 5 sec in there mind it is rubbish. Also to show cars doing power slides is just the image that the young of today think they should be able to do .Just how anyone that enjoys caravanning can think C L A R K S O N can talk any sense is just !!!!!!!!

The programme is fun and thats how i see it.Some of the stuff they do is just really funny and better than any other car show on.

It wont be everyones cup of tea,but thats everything in life "choice" if it wasnt life would be pretty dull.

Cant be doing a bad job if people talk about it.

"Also to show cars doing power slides is just the image that the young of today think they should be able to do"

You could relate that to any programme

It's not the caravan sketch, that didn't bother me, it was childrens hour entertainment. I couldn't give a monkeys **** what the topic was about. A comic he is not. If it was funny I would have laughed, infact he is about as funny as Danny trying to insult those who don't agree with him :O).... hehheh!

I don't like Ben Elton, I think he's crap, others think he's great. I like Jethro but others think he's crap. Just different humour hence my reason for thinking Clarkson is crap at trying to be funny, no matter what the sketch.

I like that particular episode - it's just a joke directed at caravanners. You wouldn't use that car to pull a van, you wouldn't do a 3 point turn in it, you wouldn't take an AK47 with you and you wouldn't reverse over the awning next to you.

They quite deliberately picked a site which allows nothing whatsoever - the kind you got to for peace and quiet so that they could exploit this. If they wanted to play football and have fires then they should have checked first! But it was all in jest so who cares?

As for the seriousness of the programme it beats the rest of the boring rubbish broadcast on the BBC (except Little Britain!).

Clarkson must be one the most boring self opinionated bigoted dick heads I have seen . He's never grown up and mocks 99% of the population who cannot afford his six figure cars. As for caravans he has no idea how a large percentage of us actually enjoy our hobby.

His epitaph will certainly be "Once a prat always a prat".

I don't watch his junk and if the rest of us gave it a miss the programme would die out or he'd be changed.

Cheers

I first saw the episode on video and thought it was vey funny, even if JC is not for you surely people can see a wind up?

Anyone could see that the fire was a set-up and not near other people, being a youngster of yester year I love fast cars and seeing them put through their paces and see little difference between what Clarkson and Co show and watching last nights Moto GP.

Caravanning outfits can cost as much or more than a good fast sports car and how people spend their money is up to them. Do you think that TG's caravanning demo will lead others to behave in the same way? I can't see that happening any more than a few power slides do. And I've yet to see any Touareg drivers nipping off to local airports to try out towing a Jet following the TG demo.

Well, I think the programme was a bit of fun. It is well known that TG has a dislike of caravans, but hey, they dedicate almost a whole show to...caravans. I enjoy caravanning, but still managed to find the whole sketch highly amusing.

JC has not always been wealthy, anyone who has read some of his early books will know that he was pretty skint back then, still highly opinionated, but his books still make me laugh out loud, even when reading then for the fourth or fifth time. I think it is great to have someone in the press who is prepared to say exactly what he thinks. If you don't agree with him, either switch off, or laugh at him making a prat of himself.

One of the reasons that TG changed from being a factual programme about everyday cars, to its current format is that nobody bothered watching the old version as it was just too dull. I think the latest format is highly entertaining and puts a bright spot in the weeks otherwise dull TV viewing. Bring it on...what will they think of to do for their challenges next time, how about making a caravan float and tow it across the channel with a submarine???

FWIW

Agree with David. was given a set of JC books for Chrstmas. !Brilliant read!

Wifes nephew and brother in-law live in London and went to BBC TV centre to watch the JC chat show being filmed some time back. JC took no cr'p from the BBC "arty farty" crew and had the audience rolling with laughter taking the mickey out of himself and the BBC wallies.

Top Gear can be really funny, but you've got to take for what it is, a kind of live comic book. In the programme you're on about, I think you'll find it was James May (alias Captain Slow) driving whilst towing the caravan. To do 54 miles in 3 hours especially whilst towing would, I think, be pretty good for him. If you want to watch a serious car programme, you've got to really be watching the likes of 'Wheeler Dealer' or such. Top Gear, 5th Gear, Vroom Vroom et.al. are really, sit back, disengage brain and let them wash over you programmes.

What I would like to see is a decent caravanning programme, the ones I,ve watched are pretty dire, for one reason or another, they make caravanning look really bland and ready for the brain dead.

What about 'Top Tow' with some Jeremy Clarkson type character, make caravanning, upbeat and up to date, for goodness sake there's enough people doing it now.

All the best

I find it quite amusing the only worry is if someone about to take up caravanning took it seriously and didnt realise that it was all stage managed. They say for instance to speed up to get out of a snake, recipe for disaster also they say the car they used was CC towcar of the year it was not it was another Kia model.Still it was funny.

C'mon if you look around caravan sites there are plenty of funny things that would have had caravanners putting a fatwah on the TG trio if they dared to show them!

50 point manouvre just to get the van 3 inches from where it first was!

Arriving with steady attachment on the battery drill and a flat battery!

Husband and wife screaming at one another or not talking!

Kids using awning poles as cricket stumps on the play field as the old man pulls his hair out trying to find to find all his frame parts!

Mr Pro caravaner who whips the van in to place in two easy moves, has the staedies down in 40 seconds, power in, gas on as the wife boils up the first brew with the pre filled kettle as he rapidly trundles the first aquaroll supply back and onto the connection. As he then calls that he's just parking the car as his boss waves two steaming cuppas out the door and he pulls away with electrics and breakaway cable still hitched breaking the connections and jerking the van causing her and the tea to flyout the door!

Yes but look what Clarkson is supposed to have done the Vauxhall Vectra, think what the caravanning Clarkson could do with badly turned out caravans?

What about caravanning Clarkson's knees sticking out of a shower/toilet cubicle shouting 'Douglas Bader couldn't s.it in here'.

How about a new caravan, a fridge, a freezer, washer, tumbler etc parked on a forecourt whilst he walks round with ' hmmm1 now which is the new caravan?'

We could have a Bugatti Veyron towing a caravan racing an aeroplane to the South of France.

You could have Vicky Butler Henderson racing round a circuit with 2 vans, parking and then setting up to see which is the quickest.

Or how about having guests turning up to cook a pukka meal like Jamie Oliver.

There's some ideas to ruminate on eh.
