Is it just me or are they excepting anything to fill their magazine.

One is recommending carrying a cordless drill & standard socket bit to use to wind the legs up or down. (A lot of people have been doing this for a number of years).

Another suggests using moist hand wipes to clean grease from their hands. (Would never have thought of that.)

If you don`t have a lot of clothes you can hang them in the wardrobe as it won`t affect the weight.( Could this be true).

You can use double sided tape to fix number plate to van instead of drilling holes. ( Well I never).

Hello Bob T

Thanks for your comments.

I appreciate that some of the comments may seem a little obvious to more experienced caravanners, but at this time of the year in particular, there are lots of people picking up the magazine and caravanning for the first time.

I'll try and ensure that we don't feature anything too obvious in future (the hand wipes one is not great) but anyone who has some advice to impart, feel free to send them to stacie.pardoe@haymarket.com.

She'll be very grateful for any submissions.

Tips may seem obvious to experienced caravaners but as Nigel says there are many new caravaners about, I love the tips in fact I love PC mag and read it from cover to cover. If its something you know then just move on to the next article. It can be very nerve racking setting up on site for the first few times and you just know that there are some out there watching and waiting for your mistakes, not all caravaners offer newbies help some just like to take the **** all I can say is keep up the good work PC mag.

Hi there

As a new Caravaner

Yes it is very nerve racking setting up on some sites, You can sometimes feel the eyes watching your every move. You have some people with all the toys and do they let you know they have got them. Radar dishes rotating round and round for incoming missiles and setting up a defence ring. Me I took up caravaning to get away meet new people see new places and enjoy life.

You just keep those top tips coming if only for me.

Regards Steve

The ' tips ' are sometimes a little basic however I have a tip that I have used for maany years that others might find handy. When we go away with the van I have found it a lot easier to pull the van with a car rather than by hand an there are a number of places that can fit whats called a towbar to the car to enable a connection to be made.I hope this tip is useful to newer caravanners.

Another tip is to use cooking oil on rubber seals. If it is a vegetable based cooking oil surely thisould be a big no no as the minerals in the vegetable oil would attack the rubber over time an cause it to perish?

Quote - not me honest

"How many people struggle to keep their Aquaroll upright when filling it at the tap? I'd guess 99.9%. Why not take the hard work away by filling it through the hole at the side?"

I am trying to work out how he did it before - my aqua roll has a flat bottom.

Even if you put it on its side to fill it, it is more likely to roll around.

Have I got this tip wrong?

AND ...... all of this is forgetting why the manufacturer put the extra hole there in the first place - versatility - unless they had some spare filler caps to use up!

I'm glad it's not only me who has found these tips somewhat obvious! In the Feb edition, we were advised to take snacks to stave off "I'm hungry" comments from the kids (who'd have thought!) and to take a Nintendo DS Lite to amuse the 7 year-old (damn, our lad's a year too old for that one!). These have initiated some entertaining discussions on alternatives, such as taking along a caravan (to have somewhere to sleep, eat and keep warm) and drinking that wet stuff that comes out of the taps when feeling thirsty......

Another tip that I have found handy over the years is at night especially in the winter shut the doors and windows and even put the fire on this way it stops you geting cold.

The side hole on the aquarol is to fit a float for super pitches either way I never have a problem with the filling as I send my wife to do it.

If the tips annoy experienced caravaners who may wish to read other things.

Why not create a page simply for newbies, they will be happy the info is there and experienced vanners can look at if they wish just to see if anyones had a good idea.

Whats the problem... You culd have a competition for forum users to come up with a title catchphrase...

Now boys and girls wouldn't that be fun!

They could call it " Why didn`t I think of that ".

How about the left handed spanners and screw drivers for foreign caravans.

How to light a fire without matches, eg rub two sticks together etc etc.

I agree there should be a "newbies" top tip page. Personally it doesn't bother me one way or the other.

Cheers

No, there shouldn't be any minerals in vegetable oil (by any, I mean less than 1 part in 10,000 - and actually a typical specification for Rapeseed oil has an upper limit of 1 in 50,000)

Vegetable oils are compatible with natural and synthetic rubbers, as are the synthetic silicone based oils. But petroleum oils and greases (sometimes called mineral oils) must never be used on rubber - these are absorbed by the rubber causing it to swell and speeding up it's degradation.

I am still wondering why someone invented double sided tape - did they even dream that in the future you would be able to use it to stick things together?

Tip

When you buy a new caravan try hooking up a car and going on holiday - it really is great fun!
