It depends what car you've got. Many cars already come prewired with all the necessary connectors in the boot so you only need an auxiliary wiring harness from these connectors to the towbar. However, they are usually specific to the car model. If you don't use such dedicated auxiliary wiring, you may run into problems with the car's electronics.

Agreed. Many modern cars do not actually have direct wiring to the rear lights. They use a computerised system with signals which operate the lights on very low voltage cable, so the old idea of jumping the loom at the back of the lights does not always work. In addition, any bulb failure system will need to be 'corrected' with relays.

Also if you just use a 3rd Party set up then the main computer will not recognise everything you are doing. It probably will work, but the dashboard warning lights etc, will not. 3rd Party suppliers get round this by using an audible relay in the boot.

The other problem is the the power cable from back to front, or wherever the battery is located, has to be heavy duty especially if you want to run the fridge while driving. Many 'budget' systems reduce the thickness of this cable on cost grounds, and although it works, it only just works.

If you have a good idea of what you are doing, then a kit is a cheap option. If not, get a reputable supplier to fit the wiring for you.

A vehicle of that age will not use CAN-Bus (as it is known) so almost any kit will do. Towsure in Sheffield is a good place to try first.

Note you should run a good quality thick power cable from the engine compartment to the rear for the fridge wiring and battery charging. You need to switch power on this cable so that the fridge/charging lines are active only when the engine is running - again Towsure do a nifty piece of electronics that fits in the boot that will do the job. It should be fused not less than 20A at the front (to protect the cable.)

Rory I can help you with the grey side of electrics as that is quite simple all you need is a split charge relay from Towsure that comes complete with wiring instuctions and sufficient wire to cable up the grey plugand of course with split charge relay when the engine stops so does the power to your fridge etc.

As for the black plugnot so easy

I hope this is some help Sir Roger
