Hi we have recently changed our car and would like to know if anyone has fitted there own tow bar? We had our last one professionally fitted, but hubby is considering doing the next one himself, any ideas where to purchase??? and did anyone have problems?

Hi Trudy,

You need to tell us the make of the vehicle concerned as all are different when it comes to the fitting of towbars.

Some vehicles require the rear bumper and cross member to be removed, some require the exhaust to be dropped, others need a small hole cutting in the bottom of the bumper.

It may be worth having a look at www.witter-towbars.co.uk who have fitting instructions on their site.

On newer cars, fitting the towbar itself is not so much an issue as installing the electrics. With all the electronics on board, it's no longer a simple matter of adding a connector here or there, but may require resetting a box of tricks somewhere inside the car.

I for many years fitted and wired my own,but not anymore,as said already many cars need the bumper removing (no easy task on amny cars and danger of damage to paint)but the electrics on modern cars are a nightmare unless you really know what you are doing.Personally I would prefer to pay the extra and pick the car up with the job done and any problems take it back.Incidently this time I have opted for a dtechable for the first time, much neater and easy to use.

Hi ,

Thanks for all your help, we have decided to get the profs to do the job, we drive a LandRover(Freelander)and weighing up the costs and difficulty we will stay clear.
