Tow car competition

They do these tow car competitions using brand new cars, but how many of us can afford a brand new Kia or Volvo V70 4 x 4 and then maintain it. The V70 costs you nearly £350 every time it goes in for a service but I did not notice that mentioned in the report.

I think that the tow car competition should be categorised in old and new cars. There are many old vehicles whose towing capabilities will out perform a new vehicle and I am talking about vehicles that are up to 10 years old.

I drive a 9 year old Toyota Surf 4 x 4 because I pull a large twin axle caravan. I prefered a nice modern caravan to a modern vehicle as I would get more enjoyment out of the caravan that the vehicle. There are many old Volvos, Fords and others that tow better and give less hassle and are cheaper to service and repair than modern vehicles.

Actually the same applies to caravans. What is your opinion of the tow car of the year test?

Towcar of the year? totally irrellevant to 95% of us! I agree that a "used towcar competition would be much more interesting.Same thoughts apply to caravans.Every year, Herself and I visit caravan shows and dealers to see about replacing our 26yr old Royale, and we always come away disappointed.

The main reason for not doing used tests on either car,commercial/caravan is that because of human abuse although the vehicles may be the same model and specification the use that vehicle has had can vary considerably. Imagine two identical cars where one is high milage and thrashed by a young company rep and the other is a middle management average milage vehicle. Which vehicle should perform the better in a used car test and the report would only be perculier to that vehicle. With new vehicles the theory is that all examples of the same model and specification should perform in a similar manner.
