Towcar and room for the kids ?

Hi all,

We've just returned from an easter break in our van (2003 Lunar Astara 525) and quickly came to the conclusion our existing car a Citroen C5 2.0 petrol exclusive with tiptonic box was simply not up to the job of towing so we need a replacement. I have 3 kids all under the age of 5, and we want something to transport us in comfort whilst preferably returning in the region of 30mpg.

We are new to caravanning and therefore would appreciate any help you can give. In expressing your views on this, please also bear in mind that we only have £12k to replace the car, so obviously we aren't looking at the latest models. Our van is approx 1050Kg unloaded.

Terry,

have you thought about a galaxy/sharan/alahambra (different names - same car). Plenty of room and tows well.

Thanks for the comments,

After reading the forum, I have a few reservations about the Kia Sedona over its reliability, build quality and mpg, but then it is a lot of car for the money and as such corners will have been cut.

As for the Galaxy, Sharan and Alhambra route, I am going to see a couple of Alhambras 130 Tdi's later today as you seem to get a lot more for your money over the other two, for what are effectively the same vehicles with the same towing ability and space.

One more to throw into the mix, is the Honda FRV, which has that new honda 2.2 diesel engine, 252lb/ft of torque and 6 seats which should make for a easy tow and room for the kids.

I'm not sure of the kerb weight or towing limits for this.
