Just bought a used Touran from the main stealers and am please to report its a lovely tow car. However, after few miles of pleasant towing I discovered the towing elctrics don't work at all. (yes I know I should of checked before setting off - usually do)

Obviously I am taking the car back to the main stealer, but wondered if anyone had some tips for a quick check that I can do in the mean time. The installation looks well done, o reason to suspect anythings wrong thre. all the elctrics are totally dead.

ideas anyoe?

Hi Steve-the common denominator here is the earth wire.Have you checked the white wire on pin 3 of the socket and the earth connection to the car's bodywork?

Sounds like the fuse to the towing electrics has blown. I had the same problem last week! Hopefully there'll be some paperwork with the car that will tell you where the fuse is. Failing that speak to the previous owner who should be able to tell you who fitted it and then you can ask them. Mine was fitted by Indespension who are very helpful. What aprt of the country are you in?

Steve, you don't say if the car is new or used, I would guess it is new ? Is the electric kit an original factory fit or VW accessory kit or is it a cheapie aftermarket ?

My guess would be that the vehicle has had an electric kit fitted and the technician has not completed the work by carrying out module initiation to enable trailer lights to work. Nowadays with new 'can bus' technology the vehicle's electrical systems have to be 'told' what equipment is fitted, there is probably a 'trailer towing module which needs to be 'added' to the 'can bus' the stealership would just need to program this via their diagnostic equipment, and of course they will most likely charge you for it !

Good luck.
