We are travelling from Dorset to the Forset of Dean next thursday for the Aug BH, and I am wondering which is the best route to use after leaving the M5/M4. Would the B4228 via St Briavels be a better route than the A466 which seems to be winding. Be very grateful if someone who knows these roads could advixe me please.

If you going to Christchurch or Bracelands, the A446 is the best route to the FoD via Monmouth, then the A4136. It's not that twisty and is a good width. The B4226 is a bit narrow for passing in places and steeper than the A466, also in the evenings (from 4.30 to 6.00) it becomes a race track.

I live in Chepstow; I'm sure you'll find the A466 no problems with regards to towing a caravan. You're right in thinking that it's a bendy road, but it's wide (over the past few years it's been widened).

A good place for a quick break-stop would be the left turn just BEFORE the Abbey Hotel; just as you approach Tintern. It's a big car park (up a slight incline), and always has loads of parking; easy to get a caravan in and out.

Remember it's the turning just BEFORE the entrance to the Abbey Hotel (it's not signposted as parking). It's almost opposite the Tintern Abbey.

Oh, while you're in the Fod, make sure you visit Clearwell Caves; it'd be worth the effort.

Regards.

Thanks for that info Tosh. It must be almost 30 years since I drove that road and I can remember it beibg quite narrow in parts, so glad its been widened. Clearwell caves were on our list of places to see!

The route we take home (coleford) is M48 old severn bridge then A48 to Lydney (via chepstow). Do not take the bypass around lydney but head into lydney once you pass tescos take the 1st left for coleford stay on this road until T junction (5 miles ish) turn right for coleford go straight over at 2 sets of traffic lights then take second right. Follow until crossroads & go straight over approx 1 mile to christchurch.

Which ever way you go enjoy the forest.

Cheers..........

Thanks for that Steve. I think we will probably use the A466 and A4136 to get to Christchurch, and suss out your route for the return journey as we want to visit Coleford and Lydney when we are there.

Hi Mate

Knowing the forest and surrouding area, I would go via Lydney, then Coleford.

Take a look at www.multimap.co.uk

A tad late I know but for future reference towing up the Wye Valley past Tintern is no problem and is a very pretty route, although I am not too sure about the roads going east from this road to the southern forest.

Certainly a good route for Monmouth, northern forest and Symonds Yat areas.
