Towing in Switzerland

I am going to be honeymooning in Switzerland next summer and as such I have been reading up on some of the more basic rules to being in the country such as driving and towing etc. I was mildly concerned to read on a site that the max. speed for a car and trailer with the trailer weighing more than 1 tonne outside of a built up area is 37MPH or 60Km/H.On the motorway it is ok to do 50MPH.

My question; has anyone towed in this country before and what are your experiences? Also, does anyone have any tips on trying out some of the mountain passes with the van hitched up.Any general tips for the trip would be appreciated too.......thanks for looking.

I have towed in Switzerland and the speed limits you quote are correct from memory and reading various website / magazines are supposedly strictly enforced.

Having said that I drove at my normal speeds ie British towing speed limits and never saw a police car or encoutered any problems

I travelled from Basle in the north of the country to Interlaken in the Jungfrau region using motorway all of the way.

The biggest problem is having to pay for two vignettes for both the car and the caravan, but as far as I can see the motorway is really the only viable option with the caravan.

Other routes are available, (no experience with the caravan I'm afraid) but it depends on how quick you want to get somewhere. We were only in Switzerland for just under two weeks so I opted for the quickest albeit most expensive option.

As for the motorways they were relatively quiet and well maintained, you still get the odd lengthy hill though but the scenery makes up for it

Cheers

I think you will find that the speed limit for towing outside built up areas in Switzerland has been raised from 60km/h to 80km/h (same as on motorways).
