Is a towing mirror an essential piece of kit for a beginner, or is it largely dependant on car width and caravan width ?

If you tow with a car you will need 2 towing mirrors. SEE current edition of practical caravan for legal rules regarding mirrors, its any excellent article and will also help you adjust your mirrors.

The law requires a minimum of one towing mirror to be fitted on the drivers side.
However, it also states that you must have an adequte view of BOTH sides of the caravan or trailer and be able to see BOTH rear corners, so , it makes sense to have two.
Apart from maybe some very specialist cars, there are none which are the same width, or wider, than a caravan.
