Towing mirrors

We have just bought our first caravan, a Bailey Unicorn Madrid, and will be towing it with a Freelander 2. We are wanting to know the best towing mirrors to buy.

Hi if your going for milenco, go for the grand or large ones, I have had the small headed version and was not impressed with the view.

Don't forget towing mirrors come in two typrs, flat or convex. My preference is for convex both sides as my car mirrors are also convex and if you use flat there is a distortion of view between the car and towing mirror. I purchased a pair of flat Grand Aeros and found they useless. Nice quality product but think carefully which would suit you.

I'll partially run with Reg on this one. Rear view camera became our best new and used towing gadget. The mirrors get the odd glance, camera far more useful.
Mirrors, another view. Milenco are very nice but those big knobs are very tempting to twist undone

We've had a left hand Milenco swiped off our Disco 3 and a new pair off our Disco4 last year. By luck we had a spare strap on mirror in the caravan, and picked another one up in NI. Cheap, they do the job fine and adjust the straps so they are really tight and vibration is not a problem and with a camera that gives far better view and info. Also another plus point, they flex if hit unlike Milenco's

Google 'rear view reversing camera' and you'll find loads. Wired versions and Wireless. Fellow caravanner spent About £110 on a digital wireless setup, in use it offers no more really than a cheapy setup that another pal saw mention of here on this forum from Maplin. We went the cheapy route as a try out as well last year. It was brilliant with our Disco and only about £35, inteference has been mimimal and not a problem, especially if you dont have the foil coated front blinds down

Hi Petera The setup I've installed is a wired system from Parkingcameras.com. Using their refs I bought a kit which consists of a Sharp 1/3" CCD camera in white (CAM11) and a 7" clip-on mirror monitor (MON1) for £120. To link them I also bought their heavy duty trailer link kit which costs £60 - expensive but definitely heavy duty! Although I haven't road tested the setup yet, the picture quality is amazing.

Would imagine the main benefit of the rear camera to be when looking to move from inside to middle lane but on a leftish bend and cant see whats coming up in the middle lane in your door mirrors.

Hi Petera Took my outfit for a 13 mile drive this afternoon to road test my rearview camera system - route included motorway. Result - WOW!!! Much better than I expected. I've been caravanning for 50+ years and towing for 37+yrs - this is the best accessory I've ever bought. No more blind spots. Money very well spent. Shall submit photos and details to PC Readers' Workshop!

My thoughts exactly Mike........ I am now considering making mine a permanent fixture instead of a clamp on but not be sure where the best place to fix it. At present I fix it centre chest height and that seems to be OK for foreign and UK travel. If I fix it permanent it would have to be lower above the number plate or above the window. Trouble is I don't have a means of fixing it temp. to try it does anyone have any experience?
