Towing on French Motorways

Having travelled for many years I am now towing instead of solo. I have noticed that caravans and trailers are using the outside lane of motorways (the overtaking lane) .Is this ok in france or does the same rule aplly as in the UK,ie trailers are banned from the outside lane on 3 lane motorways.

It is permissible to use the outside lane when towing in France if the gross train weight does not exceed 3.5 tonnes.

ps: In Germany it's not the gross train weight that determines whether you may use the outside lane, but the GVW of the towcar.

Many thanks... I am well below that weight. Does the same rule apply when there is a 80 kph sign when going down some long gradual decents or can I ignore those as I am only using a folder.

its illegal to use the outside lane of a 3 lane motorway ,you can use the outside lane on a 2 lane motorway in the UK ,towing a trailer
