Martin,

I'm sure you'll get lots of technical information from Lutz and others, but it's the weights that count - not necessarily the power.

If it helps, we towed with an elderly Fiat Tipo 1.9 TD for a while and our van is 820kg, with a maximum load of 1000kg. We had no problems at all either in the UK or abroad.

There are always three parts to questions like these. Firstly, and more importantly, whether the proposed outfit will be within the manufacturers' specification, i.e. legal. Secondly, do you intend to abide by the 85% weight ratio recommendation and if so, would you still be within that, too? Thirdly, how capable is the towcar. Based on the laden weight of the caravan that you quote, my data tells me that the answer to the first question is yes and you should also be within the 85% as well. However, whether the car is powerful enough is a very subjective issue and I refuse to make any comments on the suitability or otherwise of any towcar based only on performance. What is ample for A is woefully inadequate for B so there is no point in giving any opinion.
