Transit vans

My family have been camping and caravanning for many years.

However my husbands company vehicle is now a transit van, and it seems that several camp sites are not allowing transit vans on.The transit is our only vehicle, it is a new van with no company logo on and while we understand that this procedure is probably in place to stop "undesirables" from using the sites, where does it leave decent, respectable families?

You get some nice large lay-bys at the side of the road these days, and if your really lucky you'll get one with a burger van, or even a picnic table!!

O a serios note, you have my sympathy. A friend of mine has a commercial pick-up which he wants to use for towing but is worried about getting turned away at some sites too,

Hi Julie, this topic has come up before and no-one on the forum had ever heard of anyone being turned away but the general consensus was to check at the time of booking

Out of all the sites we have been to this year i can say i have only seen 3 with a definate NO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES sign displayed, it is a shame as from my days as a service engineer i know transits are fantastic tow vehicles.i would not mind betting that now the main season is over a lot of sites will change theire policy and allow you on with your van, just don't use the site if you now it bans your van in high season. as others have said its always best to ask when booking for peace of mind.

we recently arranged to have our first weekend away with the van when disater struck my rockershaft broke on the way home from work

van was loaded, kids excited etc, so what did we do - rang bro-in-law who came to pick up the van with his transit and we followed in Krities Corsa.

We arrived on site at Bunbury and i have to say we got some very funny looks - annd despite the fact taht the transit left after dropping us off - no-one but no-one spoke to us all weekend!!

Some friends of ours were told when they were making a booking that they would not be allowed to take their transit van on site.They have a large tent and obviously a lot of equipment so they asked if they could drop the stuff off, and park the van elsewhere or even drive it back home and come back in their car (which is very small). They were told that they could not even do that because the site was not insured for transits.

Whilst I am unaware of problems at normal sites we attend event rallies such as the "Great Dorset Steam Fair". They simply do not allow commercial vehicles on the camp sites & that includes many Land Rover versions. It all dpends on where you might go.

I've just received a reply to an e-mail I sent to a caravan park in Brean asking why they did not allow commercial vehicles on their site. They said that they did allow commercial vehicles up until 3 years ago but at one point they had about 30 transit vans on the park and that it resembled a building site, so that is the reason that they decided to ban them. My husband has sent am e-mail back asking if the owners of these vehicles were actually causing any trouble. He reckons the next thing they are going to ban will be caravans over a certain age.
