Travel insurance - what do you do?

Whenever we have taken the outfit to Europe, we have used the Caravan Club's Red Pennant Motoring & Personal insurance. However, now that we are retired and have the opportunity to go to Europe for much longer periods, Red Pennant becomes quite an expenditure. What do other people do? Do you take out a motoring breakdown policy to cover the car and a separate policy for health insurance? Or do you rely on a good set of tools and the EU Health insurance Card (was E101)? Or trust to luck..........

I'd appreciate thoughts/suggestions/experiences from those well-versed in extended stays in Europe - thanks!

Health - E111 plus a free annual family policy through Lloyds Bank. It's a basic policy that will get a sick or injured person home if required. No bells and whistles though.

Car - annual AA 5* policy, about
