Have you considered/can you afford to exclude(ing) your heart "problem" from your oveseas travel insurance to see if this will reduce the premiums? I had had a small surgical op last year before a 6 week trip to Slovenia that was creating a problem with my travel insurance (Norwich Union) but by excluding the "problem" there were then no problems. Your situation may be different of course. Good luck

hi, we found that tesco travel insurance insured my husband for a trip to canada when no one else wanted to know. I would strongly advise that you don't go without adequate cover. regards linda.

Peter!!! I have followed your every word both here and on campingcheques.co.uk. Do not let the bug--rs grind you down. The world needs a hero.

I do not know what your answer is but the thought of not seeing pics of your blue rig in the dolomites (Toblachersee)and following that recomendation (and never saying thank you) would be a real bummer.

I am sure there is an answer and that this is the site to find it. good luck, keep us informed (not far of the same problem I am sure) and KEEP TAKING THE TABLETS!!!

Once when seeking what you might call a tailor made policy for an inter-railing daughter I used an travel agent who dealt mainly with business/executive travel and up market holiday arrangements; not your main stream stuff. Explained exactly what I was after and got exactly what she needed. Might be worth a try.

Well Peter,

I work on the basis of how do I feel, feel good no recent problems, so why would I croak it on holiday ??. I go without travel insurance ( car and van insured ) but not me. I carry the European Health Insurance Card, and work on the basis of if I fell over they would pick me up,patch me up, and send me home. If it was ok to travel I would get one of our sons to come and get us, drive us back and take the ferry. If not we would use the van as a holiday home until I could travel. I know this is a very personal thing, and it takes a good amount thinking about before making a decsion. I was in the states and I had a vein start to leak in my brain, it was deemed to be life threating so I needed urgent treatment, cost was $270.000 so I would not advise going to the US without insurance, but Europe and being good Europeans why not. I believe treatment in France or Spain is as good as it is in your local hospital,so why worry. Acute in Europe is fine, chronic is a different thing altogether. I think it boils down to what you are comfortable with i.e where are you going, and for how long, what condition do you feel you are in. And has your GP given you the ok to travel.

Hi,

I think it is just irresponsible not to be covered with insurance - just retired from an insurance company - if you have some serious problem do you really want to be in a hospital where you cannot speak the language for weeks - what if you have a heart attack etc.,and need to be air ambulanced home or break a leg and cannot drive for weeks. We have seen people stuck for weeks and not able to get hom.My daughter has just been to Ibiza and had really bad problems with her womb luckily she could be got home quickly but the doctor in the hospital there actually told her if she had the operation over there the surgeons are good but not as skilled as in the large hospitals and she would definitely of had a hysterectomy, she is only young and wants a family. She is now being treated over here and luckily everything is going to be okay. E111's fine for minor injuries but please think carefully before you make the decision to go without being covered and declare everything you take medication for as believe me they will not pay out if they possibnly can.

Angela.

In the vast majority of European hospitals they speak English as good as, if not better than here!!!!. Treatment is first class this is Europe we are talking about and not some backward African country. Now if I was going to Zambia I would be fully insured, for France or Spain why bother. These are first rate countries that are above the UK in the International Health League. I don't see the French or Germans rushing here to use the NHS.

Insurance for Health is a rip off, if it makes you feel better fine, but I don't intend to add to the Insurance Companies profits. Of course you need to make a balanced judgement, but leave out the emotion when making that choice. It is not irresponsible to be without medical insurance, it is a rational decsion. Please note I did say the car and van are fully insured.

One final point the E111 is finished, what you have now is an Offical European Health INSURANCE Card.

I will leave for Prague on Thursday without travel insurance, that is a judgement that I have made based upon risk. 59 year old male, history of MI + Brain AVM, Insurance premium

Hi,

I insured last March to cover a week in Turkey in September. In July I had gall stones diagnosed (not serious) and after private scans and blood tests the doc said no problem and no op required. I notified my insurer and they immediately excluded and gal baldder/stone issues. Since Turkey is not EU the EHIC does not apply. So I have re-insured via Age Concern who applieda

Could not agree more.

For simplicity I find the Post Office the easiest with a good standard of cover.

I also get substantial "free" cover on a couple of my credit cards. I quick call to tell them where I am off to and they email me a confirmation of cover and more importantly what is covered.

As this cover seems to be "for all members" then individual underwriting does not seem to be an issue. As such the cover/policy is more like a "Corporate Policy" that Companies take out where, say, a 1000 employees are covered and an "average" underwriting takes place - so individual problems are not an issue.

This may be worth exploring and getting a Gold Card or whatever.

Not strictly "on topic" but it gives you an idea of what I mean. We were retained by an IT company to put in place Health Care, Income Replacement, Death in Service benefit & Travel Insurance (Business but cross over to Personal as well).

One of their techy guys had a congenital heart problem that made him virtually uninsurable on a personal basis. But we put in place a Corporate Policy that simply worked on the basis of numbers within the scheme. As there were over 50 members to the scheme, he is delighted to find that he now has all of the above that would be virtually impossible for him to get on a personal basis.

I think some Credit Card Cover is similar - but to be honest I have never actually asked. I have put some feelers out and if I hear anything I will post again.
