Hi William. Coward! There is nothing wrong with the Loch Lomond road. I must admit it is a bit narrow in places. But so are other roads. I too live in Ayrshire and wouldn't consider going to Fort William via Stirling. Ken

The A82 is very scenic but the top half of Loch Lomondside is a pig. The Stirling route is much quicker as there are NO narrow sections of road with rockfaces at the side. A no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Hello Kenneth,

Thats what i like about this forum. Shows the difference of opinions. What suits one person does not suit another. Probably am a coward as i would go the long way round rather than meet an artic or coach on one of those bends which would be my luck.

happy caravanning.

William

Each to his own, as they say.

I tend to agree with Kenneth, I have been both ways and found the Stirling route quite boring and it seemed to take a fair bit longer ( I went this way to avoid the traffic as it was the Loch Lomond golf tournament time).

What frightens me more than the road is the fact that people consider a trunk road used by coaches and artics all day every day "too narrow".

Now that is scary.

You`re not wrong Colin A, I`ve just done route planner on RAC (I seem to have destroyed Microsoft Autoroute.....) which shows the Loch Lomond way is 7.5 miles shorter (14 minutes quicker).

Not a lot, but why would I choose to go further, taking more time on a less scienic route?

Angus, I do not think driving through the middle of Glasgow is very scenic. Also according to the AA website delays are less likely on the stirling route. The AA route planner puts the difference at three miles and three minutes travelling from Gretna.

Colin.

Don't know what Alan means (26th Nov) we regularly go down the part of the A82 he is talking about - Tarbet to Crianlarich and never had a problem. Can be tight if you come face to face with a coach or lorry but if you are aware of this there is no problem. We live near there and most of our trips away involve this road.

Christine,

The point, surely, is that newcomers using the road won't necessarily be aware and may not be as close to the nearside as they perhaps could be. I am a confident driver but I don't think it's a good road to tow a caravan, certainly not the northern stretch of road. Once clear of Crianlarich, however, it's a doddle!

Sorry Chris as usual we have managed to stray from the original topic (and im as guilty as everyone else) If you go the Stiling way (and you'd have to be mad not to) dobbies garden centre (200 yards of the roundabout as you leave the motoway) is a good stop off. we often stop there on the way home to stock up with cheese.

Colin.

Yes, we have strayed from the original topic.

I didn`t know Stirling was alongside Loch Lomond but my map is last years version.

So to answer the original question, there are several places to stop alongside Loch Lomond and you should find it quiet, just beware of caravanners that join the A82 when you get to Crianlarich.
