We go down to the Biarritz area every year and usually go, at least, one way on the Santander route. The ferry (Pont Aven) is much nicer and a good few hours quicker than the previous ones. The cabins are great but I can't comment on the entertainment. My wife isn't that good a sailor so sitting watching a show in the bar isn't our 'thing'. They seem to have lots going on for the kids and a small pool on board. The meals are ok: typical of all of the ferries I've been on.
In 20 odd years we've never had a crossing that has been particularly bad. It's got a bit 'wobbly' once or twice but nothing too bad.
Santander is well signposted and fairly easy to get in and out of. It's a straight road to and from the autoroute so no difficult areas of the city to navigate.
The scenery along the autoroute towards France is very spectacular and the French border is no more than 3 hours so you have lots of options.
The only recommendation I would make regarding campsites is avoid at all costs the municipal site in Santander. It's dire. Unfriendly with filthy toilets and showers.
