Truma Heater

Just back from 12 nights at Blackpool CC site - where was everybody?? Only about 20 vans on site at peak.

While there we had a problem with the Truma heater - when using electric heater everything seemed fine, van heated up quickly with thermostat setting on full (No 9 on dial) but when we turned down the setting the heater stayed off even when the temperature dropped very low, and would only come back on when the thermostat was turned back above number 8 - we could hear a 'click' as the dial passed number 8 and another 'click' if we turned it down slightly. We were constantly knocking the heater on and off in an attempt to stabilise the temperature and found that using the 500 and 1000 watt settings gave a better control.

Seems obvious that the thermostat is faulty but having read some of the complications from other forum users with the Truma Ultraheat thought I would ask for your advice.

Many thanks in advance

Brian

This subject comes up quite regularly.
The first thing to check is if you have a remote sensor fitted to the fire, if you have it is likely to be fitted alongside the gas thermostat at the base of the fire.

If you do not, then the cause is the location of the wall switch, as the thermostat is located in the back of the switch, which will probably be mounted in the wardrobe wall, or maybe above the fridge or similar location.
Withthe standard wall switch, as soon as the area behind the switch warms up, the fire cuts out, as it should, but will not switch back on until that area has cooled, which is a long time after the main van has.

Answer,fit a remote sensor.

Thanks for the replies

I should have made clearer that when the van was cold throughout [eg when we had been out all day with the heating off] the heating would not come on unless the thermostat was turned right up to number 9 - it then stayed on until turned down past number 8 and then stayed off unless the stat was turned back up to number 9.

This makes me think the stat is faulty

Where is the wall switch located and what is it fitted into?, ie wardrobe wall, wall above fridge?, near the water heater?

Hi Damian

The van is an Adria Adora 532 (2007). Stat is fitted is side of cupboard beside entrance door. Heater is fitted below the wardrobe which is located beside this cupboard. Water heater is under the fixed bed some distance away.

Hi Brian, from your description the problem is the location of the switchh and a remote sensor will cure it.
The remote is a simple plug in item which overrides the wall switch thermostat, but being mounted alongside the gas thermostat at the base of the fire is much more usable and not tricked by being in an enclosed space next to the flue from the fire.

Brian, Gary at Arc Systems has the remote sensors at a much better price than anywhere else, and also more reliable, complete with installation instrctions.
