Twin Axle Motor Movers

I have a Lunar Lexon SB twin axle caravan. In September I fitted a Rhyno twin axle motor mover, which only drives the front wheels. It goes in a straight line very well, but will not turn on hard or soft ground. When I questioned Rhyno about this they said I could not expect to turn a twin axle caravan easily.

Has anyone else got a two motor mover on a twin axle caravan?

Does it turn the van?

Would I be better off with a four wheel drive mover and if so, which one would you recommend?

Hi Michael.

We have just bought a Lunar Lexon 640 RS which is a twin axle as well. I was advised to upgrade my current motor mover to a four wheel drive which I did and what a differance it makes. It turn's the van no problem. My mover is a Powerwheel.

Regards,

Mel.

We have a Delta 640EW t/a. We had our powertouch heavy duty model transferred from our s/a Lexon onto the Delta and fitted in front of the front axle. I agree that the twin cant turn as easily as the s/a model, but I find by shunting the van backwards and forwards I can turn it through 360 degrees.

Our "Truma" T/A mover is only fitted to the front wheels and although it is slow it turns the caravan without any assistance. The mechanism works by each drive wheel shuffling back and forth to rotate the van. This also helps to prevent tyre scrubbing. However, this is specifically designed for twin axle vans and swopping a unit from a S/A van will not do the same thing.

The only downside is the T/A mover is much slower to move the van in comparison to our last S/A van which had the Truma S/A mover fitted.

Hi Michael

We have a 2 wheel Powrtouch fitted to our Bailey Wyoming TA, moves the van well, can't turn in a tight circle but will easily pull the van off a pitch and turn 90 degrees to connect to car, Powrtouch

recommend fitting to rear axle for best results, although they also do 4 wheel version,if you are considering upgrading to 4 wheel drive I would speak to Powrtouch first, they have always been very helpful when I have phoned them.

We had a powrtouch twin mover on our last van but had a few problems with the motors due to it being a strain to turn the caravan off of our drive, I had to assist it by pushing on the awning rail to help turn the van.

On our new caravan we had the four wheel drive powrtouch fitted last week and its a big difference, it still doesnt turn like a single axle mover but it doesnt sound strained and turns alot tighter without assistance. If you can afford it it is def the better option.

Seems the consensus is that, if you have got a 2 wheel drive, it does the job, but if you have a 4 wheel drive, its the best thing since sliced bread! When we bought our caravan, the staff told us our battery box was not big enough for a 110 ah battery, so we bought a 100. Have now found a Lucas 110 ah battery which will fit the box, so going to buy one of those first to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks to everyone who has responded.

We have a Lunar Lexon EW twin axle and had a Powrtouch 2 wheel mover fitted. Worked OK but kept breaking down. In the end Powrtouch upgraded us to a 4 wheel system free of charge. This worked very well but still kept breaking down at the most awkward times. We had 7 breakdowns in 18 months. In the end told Powrtouch to remove it and give me my money back which they did - in full! I then bought a 2 wheel Rhyno system had it fitted to the rear wheels and had exactly the same problem, with the rollers slipping on the tyre when trying to turn, bu OK in a straight line. Got exactly the same response from Rhyno about the turning problem. So if they cant solve the problem of turning a twin axle caravan effectively why do they sell it!!! In January Simon Cooper MD of Rhyno offered to change the rollers for larger ones - still waiting for them to be fitted because no-one in the area where I live is having a Rhyno mover fitted and he wont send a fitter out on a special trip !!! One thing about Powrtouch their service & response was excellent - shame about reliability of the product.

We generally read glowing reports about caravan movers, and how much easier they have made manoeuvring the van at home on site.

But for any one who has had both a single axle and twin axle caravan, you will know how much harder it is turn a twin by hand.

The same power issues apply to movers, they have to be far more robust to spin-a-twin, so the design and the motor control is usually more complex. In fact it is unusual to be able to turn a twin within its own length.

Michael, you have now effectively had three different movers, and all have (according to your report) suffered similar failures. This leads me to suspect that perhaps you are expecting too much from the movers.
