Hi , please excuse my ignorance as we know realitivly dery little about caravanning and are looking forward very much to our first expedition.

Someone has advised me that it is not too wise to store your van too far from home as you need to roll the wheels every so often to stop the tyres from egtting "flat-spots"

Is this true?

what should we do if so?

many thanks in advance and sorry for yet another "numpty" question from me.

love Kate.

Flat spots can happen to tyres when left in one position for extended periods of time with the van weight on them.

The best way to avoid that happening is to store the van on either axle stands or a couple of spare wheels with tyres that do not matter if they get the flat spots.

If as we do, leave the van on its proper tyres, then about once a month or so just go and move the van a few inches.

Keeping the tyre pressure at the correct level is helpful also.

Hi Kate,

I'd suggest inflating the tyres to their maximum working pressure when in storage. That should reduce the possibility of "tyre distortion" to a minimum.

Then reset the tyre pressure to the correct value for road use - if you think that's too much - then remember you need to check the tyre pressures before you start a journey anyway...

axle stands is the best advise, over a period of time the sidewall weakens causing blow outs, happened to me a few years ago and since then the 'van goes on stands asap on returning home, winter wheels are another poibility although i beleive alko don't recommend them due to the weight still being on the suspension.
