Hi can anyone help?

I have just purchased a 1993 Avondale Leda Pentland twin wheel caravan and it has four brand new tyres fitted, but they are only 145/70 13T car tyres.I know it would be better to have reinforced tyres on there, but will these be ok?

Hi Jason,

First of all find the maximum "all up weight" that your caravan is allowed to carry.

Then look again at the tyre side walls, and immediately after the tyre size information look for the Load Index - this is a pair of numbers before the speed rating letter - if you are unsure there are plenty of tyre web-sites that will show you exactly.

Then multiply the individual load index by 4 and it should be around 10% more than the maximum all up weight.

Have you asked the dealer from which you purchased the caravan? You could always contact the manufacturer and seek their views? As you know, caravan tyres tend to be at a far higher pressure than car tyres (e.g. my Senator tyres (two of them) each require 66 psi) so you need to be careful.

As Robert says you need to find the load index, a number generally before the speed rating ( T on your tyres).

My tyres on a 1650kg twin axle as an example are 175 65 R 14 82 T

width of tyre -175.

tyre section height -65% of width.

R-radial

14- size at rim (inches)

82- load index(475 kg)

T- rated to 118 mph

Hope this helps
