This was the original question

...... while standard 185x14 are universally available off the shelf.

What do you mean by a 'standard' 185x14? There is always another number between the '185' and the '14', as that defines the aspect ratio.

In that respect, there is no such thing as a 'standard' 185x14.

Yes and no Lutz, by 'standard' tyres I mean full height aspect ratio and these are often marked without the percentage.

However and starting in the days of cross ply tyres, the standard aspect, the only aspect, was 100% of the width, with the introduction of radials the original standard was 82% of the width. Most if not all 82% are now 80% but it's not a fixed criteria, if marked 80, it is, if not, it could be either

On normal car type tyres and reinforced tyres, two tyres of otherwise the same size, but one with 80 and the other without, denotes a slightly different tyre, ie the load index of those marked 80 increases by one. The aspect if not marked may be 80 or 82%

In the case of light comercial tyres, there is no pairs of same size tyres, albeit there are 6 or 8ply in the same sizes but marked accordingly, so those of 80% are generally not marked, those lower than 80% of course are

Could you please explain what the load index has to do with the aspect ratio? Surely, both are independent of each other, with the load index being the number that appears on the tyre marking following the rim size.
None of the above directly relates to it
No wonder some forum members disappear without trace after they made the mistake of asking a simple question
Please try to stick to at least some semblance of relevance when replying to forum questions

back on subject ? if you change your tyres to something that was not the original spec it could invalidate your warranty
I don't know if this is true but someone allways posts this when a question is asked about changing something

In answer to the original question, I would try a tyre dealer when I knew what tyres I wanted. Changing spec would not invalidate warranty providing you upgraded above the spec and were not fitting lower spec tyres.

Just been to local tyre fitter and he says that he stocks the 195's that I need and he confirmed that I did need the 'heavy loading' tyre.

The brand he fits are 'Federal'...are these budget? His prices are same as etyre.
In the past I would have just fitted a tyre, something about ignorance and bliss!

Kind regards.

Norman,
Are the tyres recommended at or above your caravan makers specified Load index? Baering in mind that it is now considered prudent to have tyre max load at 10% (or more) above MTPLM. No good just saying heavy loading tyre as this can mean different things to different people. Federal are a well know make and are considered budget but that should not necessarily rule them out as an option. I tend to find looking on the internet at Mytyres, Blackcircles,Camskills,Tyreshopper, Etyres, Pneus Online gives a really good appreciation of the tyres available and their price. Then if I cannot obtain what I want from a local tyre supplier I use an internet supplier who will deliver the selected tyres to a local fitting depot, or I have them delivered to my home and take them to a local depot for fitting. for example Pneus Online sent tyres from Holland to my home within 2 days of ordering.

Had I not seen this thread, I would probably have just gone to this fitter and asked if they sold tyres suitable for a caravan and been happy to have them. I never realised that there was so much to worry about. I may contact Elddis and find out what brand of tyre they are currently fitting and go for that.
Many thanks for the info.

Norman
