Has anyone had them fitted recently and how much did they pay?
I have used a tyre company in the past and wonder how they compare with caravan dealers.
No opinions regarding there usefullness please, I have read all that before and they are going to be fitted.

We paid about £120 a pair on our twin axle. Probably get them fitted on the new caravan also for peace of mind.

I'm a bit late in replying, but when I had my caravan tyres replaced a month or so ago E tyres (who were excellent, by the way) charged me an extra £15 to refit the existing Tyron bands, as it takes the fitter a little longer to do the job. I thought this was very reasonable and I was fascinated to see him do the fitting and listen to the full explanation of it all.#Regards

Try your local "Hi Q" tyre dealers they were the official outlet when I had mine done. Sorry I cant rememmber the price paid but it was definitely cheaper than the van dealer wanted.

Hi David
I have Tyrons fitted to the 3 'vans that I have owned, and to one towcar, by my local Hi-Q dealer Tyrecare of St Helens. Their prices were always considerably cheaper than the price quoted by local caravan dealers. One local caravan dealer admitted that they would only take my caravan to a tyre dealer and then add their mark up to the price!!!
Sorry I can't remember what we paid for the last 'van.
Although, like you, I am thoroughly committed to Tyron bands I would warn you that they are not liked by Continental tyre fitters. I once had to have a tyre replaced in France and although I left the instructions, in French, when I got home I had Tyrecare check it and they found that the French guy had not tightened up the band, ie, would have been useless if I'd had another puncture. On another occasion in Italy the fitter, although he spoke excellent English, refused to refit the Tyron band and despite my protestations levered it off with a screwdriver/ He then handed it to with words to the effect of "put it in the car boot". Fortunately Tyrecare were able to straigthten and refit it in the UK. I have towed with idea of getting the Tyron "spider" refitting tool to carry with me on Continental trips but it is another extra weight.
I hope this helps
Tim.

I have had them done now at HIq Burslem, £138 supplied and fitted.
I too worry a little about continental service, I did visit a dealer supposedly the French agent for Tyron and they clearly had never seen one before. My local dealer thinks it feasible to request they cut off the old tyre and dont bother asking them to refit the band and get it done back home. I have not (and hope I dont have to) tried this but I have a multi-lingual note to this effect.

I don't wish to roll up the merits or otherwise of Tyron bands, but I can understand the reservations Continental fitters have. Over here Tyron bands are illegal because they constitute a technical modification to a vehicle which is not approved by the vehicle manufacturer. The tyre fitters are therefore acting correctly in not putting them back on. Theoretically, it would be possible to obtain a concession to use them if appropriate documentation can be produced. However, as such documentation is not available, this would be difficult, if not impossible.

……it is not just Continental fitters!

I recently took my caravan wheels to have new tyres fitted at one of the UKs long established retailers with a good reputation in the transport industry.
I was asked this specific question by the depot manager…..
"Are they fitted with those bl**dy silly band things?"
The answer was no!

I had two really high specification Hankook tyres fitted and balanced for £169.

I did start this off asking for ideas about price not opinions regarding the value of fitting tyrons as its been gone over many times before.
Its a matter of choice I paid to have them, you paid for high spec tyres which incidentally caravan manufactures dont fit. When I took in original fitted tyres for replacment an equallly respected national dealer told me they were what he classed as "buget" and explained that budget tyres are old fashioned tread patterns but perfectly adequate on a trailer providing they were made to EU standard. He had no incentive to do so as I would have been willing to spend more. Now I just change them more often instead.
Note for Lutz
The legal situation must only apply to Germany as Tyron have distributers in UK, Belgium,Fance, Holland, Spain and Turkey

David …… you are quite right.

The decision on what you buy and fit to your caravan is entirely yours.
You had already stated that you had had the work done and at what cost.
No point on me commenting on your original question!

My post was meant to a follow on from Lutz’s and Big Tim’s posts in highlighting the problems you might have, should you need subsequent work done which could be an emergency roadside repair.
Yes you can have them fitted at specialist depots but in general fitters do not like them.

I fit high spec tyres to my caravan because it is an old model circa 1995.
It is fitted with 175x13 rims and suitable tyres are quite hard to find.
The tyres I have just purchased took my supplier 14 days to obtain.
He told me he tried 5 wholesalers before striking lucky.
My caravan does around 5000 miles a year on the Continent and I have it on extremely good authority that my tyre size is almost impossible to obtain over there.

My money goes into having good tyres and a good spare for these reasons.
" Perfectly adequate tyres for a trailer" ………. is not good enough for me.

Remember ........ T bands can only be of any use after the tyre has failed!

I wonder if run flats is the way to go if you have a twin axle. It is my understanding that sometimes twin axles are fitted with standard car tryes instead of commercial tyres. Mine are 175/65 R14 (42psi), but what would be rated as good quality run flat tyres if they can be fitted?

……from the tyre point of view twin axles are a different animal.
The weight is spread over 4 tyres and this means that ordinary car tyres usually have a high specification when fitted to a twin axle.
Comments I have heard indicate that a deflated tyre can go unnoticed by the driver from the handling point of view on a twin axle.
As with all deflations structural damage to the rim and caravan wheel arch are likely.

If 4 tyres like the two Hankook tyres (referred to previously) were fitted to a twin axle then the caravan could weigh up to 2.8 tons!
