Unruly children on sites - should wardens do more?

Before I start, I'd just like to say that I'm a mum of 3 boys, part-time school admin worker, part-time registered childminder and I like children very much (most of the time!)

On an overnight stop last weekend we were pitched opposite a family with 5 young children ranging from around 2 years old to about 10. They were running riot all over the site, crawling under other people's vans, climbing on the roof of their parent's car, going into people's vans uninvited and generally being a nuisance. It was raining as we left and they were all out without shoes and socks on and we saw 2 of them urinating on the road in full view of all and sundry. Our next door neighbour on the site had had his EHU pulled out by these kids on 3 occasions over the week and their parents just weren't bothered, giving the 'kids will be kids' excuse whenever complaints were made against their little angels. He tried complaining to the warden but to no avail.

My question is this - should the wardens have done something about this family, maybe given them a stern warning and then evicted them? We encourage our boys to play out which to us is part of the appeal of caravanning but they've been brought up to respect other people's space and privacy. We'd be horrified if they'd caused even slight inconvenience to others. The issue with the EHU cable was simply not acceptable behaviour not to mention dangerous. The bollards were the 'insert and twist' type so it had definitely been tampered with and hadn't simple fallen out.

Seeing behaviour like this really angers me as it's the minority like this family that get other families like mine tarred with the same brush.

We were glad to leave what had otherwise been a very pleasant stopover.

Rant over!

Claire,

The last time I witnessed such a caravanning family was on a roadside verge where a group of them regularly descend and we watch the crime the crime rates go up.

I'm not blaming them, it's just a coincidence that it happens every time they turn up.

Anyway, I would be disgusted if I came across the family that you describe on a site and I would do my upmost to get them chucked off.

Unfortunately this is another example of s**m kids following in the footsteps of their s**m parents, something which the rest of us with standards cannot condone, and yes the wardens should have done something about it.

Ken.

The fact that the wardens didn't act is to me as bad as the behaviour of the family that you describe.

Was the site run by either of the clubs or was it a commercial site?

Ahhh the time when being a club member virtually guaranteed order on site seem to drawing to an end, Parksy, me old mate.

We recently stayed on a THS (CCC temporary holiday site) and watched in growing horror as a gent played 'tennis' with his grandchildren - using those long handled 'scoop' things (that, I think, are designed for chucking balls a long distance for dogs to retrieve)

The balls flew high in the air - and kept landing about six feet away from parked cars (including ours)

If only kids were playing it would have been easy to have asked them to move - but as a (supposedly) sensible adult was doing the ball flinging it somehow became much harder to complain.

There is usually a strictly enforced 'no ball games' rule on these sites - but the Stewards (who couldn't have failed to see what was happening) didn't intervene, preferring to sit around and swig lager with their cronies.

Happily, such behaviour is still fairly uncommon on Club meets - but it does seem to be on the increase.

As you'll be aware, the CCC has lots of sections - the photographic section, boating section, folk dancing section, etc. Perhaps it's now time for a 'no kids' section! (it would probably be the most heavily subscribed section in the club ;)

hi all

although this subject has been done to death several times it is worth reiterating such behaviour should not be tolerated unfortunatly on club sites it is, and is also the reason we are no longer members of either club

It was actually a council site and was lovely apart from this one issue.

Not completely sure what the wardens response to the complaint was as we weren't the complainers but the bad behaviour continued and the family remained on site so wasn't very effective.

Hi Claire,

I have just read your "rant" and totally agree!! I to have 3 boys and I would be horrified if they behaved in such a manner. Children do not have the respect they need for others or their belongings these days, I am not in any way old and "fuddy duddy" I am only 27, but I would say all my children have impeccable manners and are always respectful to others, if not they get a smacked bum and sent to bed! I love kids - pretty much all of them, but sometimes you get that 1 which really tests your nerves and unfortunately 5 for you! I hope that your holiday wasnt completely ruined. And yes I think they should of been thrown off the site!

Take Care :)
