Use of Cassette Toilet and Chemicals for Cleaning

hi there, I guess these questions have already been asked but here goes anyway:

We only use our cassette loo at the mo for overnight number 1's. However we are considering using non facilities sites in the future, so then would need to use the Loo for both body functions.

We currently use pink and blue chemical, then after a couple of days use, I simply take the cassette to the disposal point, empty it and then rinse with water. We currently never put Loo roll down the cassette either as a fellow caravanner onsite when we 1st started out last year advised us not too. so we dispose of that seperately using baby nappy bags.

When you do use the cassette loo for both functions, do the blue and pink chemical do the job or do you need to get anything extra or do additional cleaning to keep it clean!!

What do you do when you empty it, again do you simply empty, rinse with water, then add new blue chemical and water?

Also do you put your toilet paper down the loo?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but never realy thought about it before and if we do start using it we don't want to have a dirty, smelly toilet within the caravan.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Andrew, the Thetford Cassette toilet system has been around for quite a number of years and is MEANT as a mobile toilet facility, which means it has been designed to cope with normal bodily waste, not just urine.

The important chemical in the system is the Blue (or Green), in the holding tank, the Pink is a newcomer on the block as such, and is not really necessary.

For making full use of the toilet, make sure you use the correct dosage of Blue as using less will slow down the breakdown rate.

As for paper in the toilet, as long as you use any of the normal "soft" papers,ie Andrex, and NOT the quilted ones, they will break down easily in the tank.

When you empty it, just do as you have been, but when you rinse the holding tank, do not be too vigorous swishing the water around, you may well dislodge the float level sender, and its NOT easy to relocate, as you cannot see it as it is inside the waste tank.

Hi Andrew

As a CL lover I never use sites with facilities, the Thetford is excellent for all uses. However, from experience, my advice would be to use the Greek method of paper disposal. The chemical breakdown of waste is so much more efficient without paper in the holding tank.

Hi Andrew and Stuart

As Damian has stated the toilet should be used for all functions and it is quite safe to put toilet paper down it.

If you use the appropriate chemiclas the paper and solids will break down so all you pour away is colourd water with NO smell.

See Another question? re cassette... in equipment section for more details.

Please do not feel that you go away caravanning and you cannot perform all the tasks, functions etc that you would do if you were at home.

Caravanning is supposed to be fun and enjoyable and free from the worries that you have the rest of your life !

So happy caravanning....Joyce
