The December issue of the CC Magazine reminds drivers of Rules 274 and 275 of the Highway Code regarding the use of warning triangles on motorways:

Rule 274: "..... never use them on motorways ....."

Rule 275: "..... Never attempt to place a warning triangle on a motorway ....."

Note that this does not apply on the Continent and warning triangles, where required, are required on motorways, too. However, they should be placed further away from the vehicle than on other roads. Austrian rules are very specific about the location of the warning triangle:

50m from the hazard in built-up areas,

150m from the hazard outside built-up areas,

250m from the hazard on motorways,

and approximately 70cm from the roadside edge

(I don't know whether other countries are quite as precise - to my knowledge they only have recommendations)

Warning triangles or their use are not compulsory in the UK.

They are in most European countries and it is an offence not to have one in your vehicle.

In Spain two are required to be carried by Spanish registered vehicles.

Therefore it might be prudent for UK visitors to carry two when visiting Spain
