Use your PC Screen as a TV

Don't buy an expensive DVB-T Television for your caravan if you already have a decent flat screen LCD display on your computer! I've just purchased a Digital / Analogue Set Top Box that I can plug directly into my Samsung SyncMaster 225BW PC monitor. There's no need for the PC to be connected.

It has a multitude of connections that include DVI in and out, S-Video in and out and Composite video in and out. It is capable of putting out resolutions up to a massive 1920 x 1200 and can cope with 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios. It has even got Picture in Picture, providing you input more than one source. It drives my wide screen display at it's native 1680 x 1050 resolution and the picture is fantastic.

If you don't have DVI on your monitor don't worry you can buy a DVI to D-Sub adaptor for a couple of quid!

The unit, which comes with a separate power supply and remote control is only 115 x 180 x 25 mm and weighs less than 1kg.

Supported Display Settings:

1024 x 768

1280 x 768

1280 x 1024

1360 x 768

1440 x 900

1600 x 1200

1680 x 1050

1920 x 1200

I purchased mine from Komplett for £129 but you can also get them from Media Atlantic.

Hi John,

the examples you have quoted ate all CRT types, which are heavily discounted because they are out of date technology.

The AverTV will work with CRT displays and LCD displays. It is very small and has very high resolutions. The bigger the resolution the better quality the picture will be as there are more pixels making up the picture. If you couple this with the fact that it can also drive DVI and your LCD monitors native resolution this means that no conversion is taking place and you get pixel for pixel quality.

I already had a suitably portable DVD player, a superb 1650 x 1080 flat, widescreen display for my PC and was in the market looking for a widescreen for my caravan. This seemed to fit the bill nicely.

The AverTV can do both Freeview and analogue so in poor Freeview reception areas (beleive me there are quite a few) you can usually get a picture on analogue and when they eventually turn off the analogue signal the digital signal will be much improved.
