Hi Sandra,

Yes we use a standard microwave in our van. It is a 750w model. Most site supply's seem to cope with the power requirements but just be careful what else you have switched on at the same time. If you have an electric kettle under boil this will push you over the top and trip you out, and if the electric heating is on full blast that could also send you over the top. If you do trip out, reduce the cooking power on the microwave for that site.

most vans what come with a fitted microwave are fitted with a standered one and most are 750 or 800 max which just plug in a socket at the rear of the unit

Be careful as the microwaves fitted in caravans are low voltage versions. The initial "fire-up" voltage, so to speak, is lower than a domestic microwave.

I have been looking at my Microwave Oven and on the base is the Data Plate.

The plate states the Output Wattage is 750w, this is the power rating of the microwave when cooking, however is also states Input Wattage as 1020w, this is the amount of power it draws in from the mains during operation.

1020w / 220v = 4.6a Therefore this is suitable for use in the Caravan

best regards, Martin

Microwaves can be useful, however do take account of the weight. It is more than likely it will need to be carried in the tow vehicle and can take up a lot of space as well. Unless you really cannot live without a daily fix of take away Markies meals etc then maybe give it a 2nd thought. There is not too much that you cannot cook with the equipment you probably already have, especially if you have a UK manufactured van.

Its a good thing that we are all different and that leads to a balanced discussion

We have been fitting microwaves to our caravans for 20 years and the last 2 vans have had microwaves fitted as standard and they are getting to be a standard fitting on mid range vans

We use the microwave a lot and its not just for takeaways

They are a lot lighter in weight than they used to be and we would sooner have the microwave than the oven which is heavier, takes up a loy of room and is expensive and which we use to store disposable barbecues

I agree with John plus with a microwave it is quicker, easier and cleaner, not so much washing up. Although our Abbey didn't come with a microwave it had a dedicated cupboard with electric socket for it. We too use a normal microwave we bought from Tesco.

Who wants to slave away cooking with the oven and hob? We don't, we are away to take it easy.

I did use a microwave for a while but gave up because of the aforementioned weight. The only heavy thing in the outfit now is probably me. I also do not have an oven either. Being a summer van lover, we tend to do most cooking outside and the BBQ or electric frying pan/grill/wok covers virtually all culinary choices. If I want a roast chicken then a rotisserie will do just nicely, especially with a chilled bottle of Chablis.

Just one small addendum. If the microwave is lighter than the oven then something ain't kosher. Microwaves require lead screening and even the low power ones still have a good weight. I have not stuck the thing on the scales but somewhere in the order of 12-15 kg seems about normal. Most ovens are made of pretty thin steel.

I accept the point regarding cleaning, unless you have a combi unit. Here the browning bar is a glass bar at the top and has lots of nooks and crannys.

Don't get me wrong we do use one at home, it is just we tried and decided we did not need it in the van. That weight can be occupied by a case of wine or two.

The main point I was making is weight. Try lifting any microwave and then any general oven in a Camping store. There is a heck of a difference. There is something in there that is defintely heavier, whether it be lead or thick steel or otherwise, and I accept that it is unlikely they use lead nowadays for its own safety reasons. I was remembering back inthe good old days (70's) when Panasonic started supplying. The 1st one I bought cost me over 300 pounds. Now you get them for 25 quid.

If you can safely carry it then fine, personally I did not feel it was necessary for a holiday. Gets a bit like taking the kitchen sink as well.

Still prefer a case of wine.

Hi,

Yes a bog basic microwave must weigh somewhere near to 10kgs or so, ours travels on the floor at the front of the van with a cushion around it to protect it from the water butts and the waste container should they move. Coupled with the Cadec BBQ and everything else the extra weight of the microwave is negligible. However the easy use and cleaning of a microwave far out ways the extra weight that we carry.
