I know you can buy 12v tv's (although they seem expensive to buy)but does a mains lcd tv work ok using an inverter plugged in to the 12volt outlet? I read that tv's don't like to run on the lo-cost models.

I very successfully operate a SONY 15" LCD TV via an inverter.

The SONY's AC adaptor provides a 16.5 VDC output.

The rated DC wattage marked on the TV is 32, the measurer wattage is 30. The wattage into the inverter is 38 indicating an overall efficiency for the inverter and adaptor of 79%.

My inverter is a "handy Mains" 200 Watt unit.

I also have a cheapo [ Ring ] 120 inverter, this is unable to start the TV.

A better solution would be to select a TV that uses a 12V DC input.

Watch the power consumption, they vary a lot.

thanks for that. We are just setting up from scratch with a new van etc and are thinking of going away a lot next year ( children just left home). I read a report that I picked up at the nec that said tv's don't like cheapo inverters as the waveform is not sinusoidal so thought I would ask. I also looked at 12/24 volt tv's and found them expensive compared to, say, an LG like we have in the kitchen at home. If we go away a lot I like to keep up to date with the news etc and it's a fair bet we'll be at a site w/out hookup for some of the time.

As usual the forums are a wealth of knowledge:)

To have a successful TV/inverter system I have found the following........

The TV should be an LCD that only has a mains input that is stepped down to a low power DC supply, often 12 volts.

When this type is powered by an inverter, the DC supply is uniform and free from interference, unlike a direct supply from the caravan battery.

The inverter should be a modified sine wave type, no more than 200watt output or you will have to cope with a cooling fan, and worry about it over heating.

The inverter needs direct fused connections to the caravan battery, using as short a lead as possible. This can be via a cirgarette type socket. A long cable or the caravan existing sockets impose a restricted 12volt supply to the inverter and poorer performance.

My system uses a Mikomi 15" colour LCD and a Paice digibox on Sky Freesat. My 150watt inverter, set up as above, powers both with no touble. The setup gives perfect TV and radio reception and has been tested as far south as Toulouse,France using a standard Sky 55cm dish.
