Vanner's revenge

There's been a lot of comment about Top Gear's prog with the 3 mutineers having a good go at us 'vanners, but if we can't laugh at ourselves then who can we laugh at?

However what we should do via the CC, C&CC or PCV is challenge him to a "race" across England - say from central London to a glorious CL in Cornwall with the strict proviso that no speed limits are broken and on car recording equipment to check this, which I'm sure would show that towing a van in our overcrowded country makes little difference to your actual average journey speeds and arrival time, PROVIDED this is done by competant towers and tow-cars.

In addition, a 'vanning holiday should be compared with the stress and grief that a typical package holiday causes - delayed flights, overcrowded airports, extortionate car parking charges at same, delays, crappy hotels, awful food, etc etc and how much families, children and their pets enjoy being in the fresh air when caravanning.

When arrived on site we should ensure that out pro report is equally biased by focusing on a couple/family having a great time, who can easily reverse and set up their awning, have a good meal and a few glasses, and who are enjoying superb views etc, and who do not go vanning to fill/empty their loo! A top of the range van should be featured for both families and couples - I can remember when we first started driving about 200 yds from home to asked by my then 18 month old daughter for the loo - you can't stop and attend to that in a normal car!

What do you all think would be a good counter to Clarkson & co?

I think you'll probably find that on single carriageway roads in particularly caravans are responsible for hold ups. Even dual carriage ways cause problems when there are a few hills to climb. ( Try A55 into North Wales on a Bank Holiday weekend.)

I think you make presumptions about package holidays that are way off the mark too.

At the end of the day Top Gear does all caravanners a favour if it puts off a few in an overcrowded market.

Lets face it we all caravan because we enjoy it. Why do we need to demonstrate that ?

The best revenge on Clarkson would be simply to ignore him. He is just a big show-off. Stop talking about him, stop watching his puerile programme, don't give him any sort of encouragement. It might not change him, but public indiffernce might at least persuade the BBC that there was no point giving him and his cronies further air-time, so their ridiculous views would only be shared with their mates down at the pub, rather than being inflicted on the rest of us!
