vat in france

VAT changed from 19.6% to 5.5% but there is no legal requirement for any restaurant to change their prices. They can pocket the difference, however market forces will probably induce some change even if it is not the whole 14.1%. It is only on food, not alcoholic drinks so watch the bar bill. Some restaurants have aggressively dropped prices but up to 20% but others???

I suspect it is a bit late in the season to see much of a difference but next year, who knows?

Hi Lee

we have just returned from a month in Provence and we did notice that most of the printed menus said lower tva but on certain items? pop wasnt included but water was, and ice cream wasnt but the frmage blanc was? seems like touristy things were not affected. we did notice that lots of the blackboard "menu du jour" had a cross through the price and were lower.

all I can say is at this years charges ANY reduction was welcome.

We paid 8e for 2 small coffee creme in Avignon and were paying 5.50 for a lt of fizzy water, wine was very expensive in cafes too.

still keep doing it though and we had a great time!!

Regards Maddy
