Hi There

I have a 1997 Vectra 1.8 16v will this pull a Abbey Swift Vogue 5 Birth. the max weight is 1400kg for a Vectra I thing the Swift is a bit heavier would this be ok

I have been told that if the car is the same weight it should be ok, but I do worry about the car pulling over it's weight

any help is very much appreciated

The maximum permissible towloads for a 1.8 16V Vectra are as follows:

Saloon/Hatchback, manual with air conditioning, 3.74 final drive ratio, 1250kg

Saloon/Hatchback, manual with air conditioning, 3.94 final drive ratio, 1400kg

Saloon/Hatchback, automatic, 1450kg

Estate, manual with air conditioning, 3.74 final drive ratio, 1150kg

Estate, manual with air conditioning, 3.94 final drive ratio, 1300kg

Estate, automatic, 1400kg

Manual cars without air conditioning have a limit which is 50kg higher.

I used to have a 1.8 16V Vectra and towed a 1300kg caravan with it. I'd consider that to be just about on the limit of what is suitable. Anything higher and you'd be struggling a bit even if it is within the manufacturer's spec.

As you know Lutz, Vauxhall specify the same towing limit for cars without air-con as those with it. Vauxhall don't offer alternative final drive ratios so UK Vectras have a much simpler structure of towing limits than the Opel Vectra, albeit lower as they obviously can't exceed GM engineering limits.

I don't have the details to hand for the Vauxhall Vectra Mk1 (Opel Vectra B) but they will be the lower of options you've detailed.

In order to cover all variants without adding to the complexity, I believe Vauxhall always specify the more conservative figure, i.e. the one with air conditioning, for all models. I imagine that all Vauxhall Vectras have the 3.94 final drive ratio but I wasn't sure so I gave both figures.

Hi Graeme,

Lutz has very helpfully given you all these figures but basically the caravan is to heavy for the car ,especially as it is only a 1.8 engine.I would have thought a caravan in the region of 1100kgs would be far better.Sorry to sound gloomy.Jim.

Like I said, from my experience with the same car and engine combination, 1300kg is about the limit. Of course, 1100kg would be better still but certainly anything over 1300kg would be stretching its capability.
