We unfortunately left an egg in the top of the fridge door in the caravan and found it quite a few months later...the smell was unbelievable!!! I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of the smell..bleach,lemon,bicarb,fridge deodourizers, can anybody think of anything else?...I would be very grateful.

Failing that..can anyone tell me where I can find second hand fridges ?? Thanks...

In such a serious case as this, I'd first of all use an odour neutaliser which can be found at your local pet store. (it's supposed to neutralise doggy smells). Give the fridge a liberal spraying with this and allow it to work for a day or two.

Then you will need to disinfect the fridge all over with a solutin mad eup of baby bottle steriliser. (Milton).

If that doesn't work then dynamite is the next option. Or a new fridge as you've already thought of the other tricks of the trade.

I heard once that leaving an onion cut in half in a fridge absorbed ordour. Apparently the cut sides should be exposed. I've no idea if it works but I'd give anything a try!!!

You want to try vinegar and water solution the stronger the smell the more vinegar is needed. Wipe it around the fridge as if you were ceaning it, leave it for a few hours and then clean the fridge with a normal kitchen cleaner to take away the smell of vinegar and you should then have a normal smelling fridge.

Clare, take the door off and lie it on the floor, gently lift up the door seal and you should find many screws holding the innner panel to the door, remove all these screws and the panel will come away from the door with the seal around it, now gently remove the seal and thourally clean all the inner panel and door and the seal making sure you get in to all the folds. be warned do not use too much pressure on the seal as it is quite thin in parts. use a good household cleaner but then use bicarbonate to neutralise the cleaner smell. reasemble the door in the reverse way to above but make sure the door is lay on a absolutely flat surface or the door will be twisted as you tighten the screws.

This is a very easy but time consuming job but believe me after 16 years in the fridge trade it is the only way to remove the bacteria which will have got in to all the nooks and cranys of the door. hope this helps you, best wishes and good luck.

Hi...thanks to all that replied. I'm going to start this weekend by taking the door off and cleaning it...then if still smelly (hopefully not !) I'll work through all the other ideas! Many thanks, x

Hi Claire

When we moved house and put our things into storage, we were told by the removers to put an unused tea bag into a container and place in on a shelve in the closed fridge. The fridge was in storeage for several months and no horrible smells. We use this method all the time in our caravan when it is not being used. Hope this helps if all helps fails.
