Voltage Drop and Water Pump Efficiency

Hi

I was talking to someone this mornig who mentioned that if the battery voltage drops too much it can affect your water pump, but that you can make an adjustment on the pump to compensate. Apparently you can now buy a bit of kit that makes that automatic adjustment for you (for about £38 quid). Does anyone know what this is???nad / or where to get one

Hi,

I suspect, from past experience, this depends on the type of system you have in your van. If it is a pressurised system (no micro switches in the taps) then you can adjust the pressure in the system by turning the top of the pressure switch - it maybe that this has now been automated. If you have a micro switch system then as the battery gets lower the pump simply works slower.

When we had a pressurised system, on the rare occassion when a low battery affected the system a slight turn on the pressure switch was certainly not worth

Yes, if the voltage from the battery changes ( as it will over time and use) it will affect the performance of the pump. In particular with the submersible pumps, the peak pressure will fall when the supply voltage falls. It could happen that on a reduced battery voltage, the pump cannot develop enough pressure to trip the pressure switch.

I have not seen the automatic system to compensate for this problem, so cannot comment about its effectiveness, but as Alan points out I do wonder if it is worth
