Go for the diesel D5 pre generation 3 (2007) it doesn't have a DPF and the full torque converter auto geartronic box means no DMF to worry about and it is well matched to the engine. The D5 has plenty of torque and is seen to be reliable.

Rick, I have the V70's predecesor, an 850 se 5cylinder petrol, and while it is a nice car, it probably has the worst tractiopn I've ever known in a front drive car. It does not have traction control, but suffers from wheelspin, solo, on attempting almost any hill start in the wet.I no longer try to tow with it.

The only Volvos that can be used for towing are the V70 cross country and the V70 as the rest are useless when it comes to wet grass fields. I am speaking from experience. Most Volvos are great for motorways though as very relaxing drive.

Surfer has got a little mixed up on his Volvos. You can get a V70 fwd estate, V70 AWD but with standard ride height and XC70 AWD with increased ride height. In the post 2007 Series 3 the V70 AWD was dropped and the XC70 had AWD and FWD options. If you look at the Warranty Direct Reliabilty Index it will give some information on relative aspects of reliabilty for cars over 3 years old. There is another website called True Delta (US) but which has UK and European contributions which covers relaibilty from new. It is quite useful as you can compare on a year on year basis with other cars makes. However diesel numbers are low as US Volvos are all petrol.
If your normal motoring costs can stand petrol the 5 cylinder Volvo engines are near bomb proof and have none of the issues some modern high performance diesels can bring. Although pre 2007 diesel V70s did not have the dreaded DPF.

Agreed Clive, the Volvo 2wd is a superb car, on a flat dry road.On anything else, its traction is useless, therefore NBG as a towcar.
