Volvo XC 90

Re my previous post regarding Volvos. Is there any body on the Forum who towes with a Volvo XC 90.We need a vehicle to tow a twin axle caravan with a weight of 1830kgs.I appreciate comments to my previous post. Regards Sir Roger FFS

Good morning,

We tow our Swift Challenger Grande 635 with a 2024 Volvo XC90. The caravan weighs in at 1840kg when fully loaded, and my wife takes great pleasure in ensuring that we fully use this payload. 🙄

The XC90 has the B5 mild hybrid diesel engine which I think delivers 235 bhp & oodles of torque!.

I have found the Volvo to be a fantastic tow car which copes with our caravan very well, the combination is very stable.

The Swift is our first twin axle after several single axles and I feel that is a much more stable and predictable trailer than the previous vans. We had the Volvo retractable tow bar fitted to the car when purchased and this has proved to be very good. Max hitch weight is 100kg.The trailer light check function is a very useful tool.

The boot space is cavernous and takes all the load we choose to take with ease. In the past 2 years of ownership we have towed approximately 4.5 / 5k miles both in the UK & on the continent and on the whole are very pleased with the car.

Fuel consumption has averaged approximately 29/30 mpg when towing. Extremes have been 20mpg along mountain routes to 34mpg on flat motorway sections.

The only negatives so far has been software issues, it regularly has brain freeze and the car needs a reboot/reset. Not major but bloody annoying.

That was one of the biggest frustrations with my V90's.

Hi All many thanks for your replies. As usual very helpful. We at home are still toying with the Volvo XC 60 Is there anybody tows with the XC 60 2.0 Ltr version . ?

Sir Roger, I went to buy an XC70 several years ago, had all the extras, but on driving it, Mrs H, tried driving it, and as she likes to have her driving seat very upright, she found the headrest pushed her head forward, we found out that all Volvos of the 2010 era the headrest were NOT adjustable,
I don't know if they are now adjustable.

We have a 2024 Diesel XC60 towing a 2025 Swift Elegance 835. We got the car wanting something that would be capable of towing the caravan but not overly massive or with a large engine as most of the time it's used as a daily driver. We are probably close weight wise but load the heavy items in the car including ourselves. Towed the caravan to Germany last year and found it more than capable of the task. Plenty of torque and power for the job.

We have a Mk 2 XC60, petrol T5 Automatic. This is our second XC60, the first having been a diesel D5 Manual. We have been very happy with it as a tow car, it pulls our Vigo without any issues, comfortable and capable both on long motorway journeys and on the smaller country roads we often find on the final approach to campsites. It is also pretty good to drive without the caravan. The main downside would be that it's not that economical, and Volvo servicing is not cheap.
